WASHINGTON, DC: Democratic lawmaker Jamie Raskin has claimed House Republicans' impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden is a "product of Russian disinformation," reported HuffPost.

Raskin's controversial remarks came after the Department of Justice revealed on February 20 that Alexander Smirnov, an FBI informant who is indicted for making false statements against the president and his son Hunter Biden, might have connections with Russian intelligence.

"It appears like the whole thing is not only obviously false and fraudulent, but a product of Russian disinformation and propaganda," Raskin told reporters.

Special counsel David Weiss indicted the confidential informant for falsely claiming the president received a bribe from Ukrainian energy company Burisma, where the first son was a board member.

Jamie Raskin says impeachment inquiry against Biden has 'essentially ended'

"The impeachment investigation essentially ended yesterday, in substance if not in form, with the explosive revelation that Mr Smirnov's allegations about Ukrainian Burisma payments to Joe Biden were concocted along with Russian intelligence agents," the Maryland Congressman said as per The Hill report.

The FBI informant's indictment and Russian intelligence links undermine House Republicans' bid to impeach Biden since they considered Smirnov as "a highly credible FBI source" to prove Biden received a bribe from the Ukrainian company when he was the vice president.

According to the February 20 court filing, the Justice Department urged the court to keep the informant in jail ahead of the trial, citing he "claims to have contacts with multiple foreign intelligence agencies" who "could resettle Smirnov outside the United States if he were released."

It also said that law enforcement is aware of his Russian intelligence affiliation as he had provided photographs and documents about them.

Raskin had previously argued that the GOP-controlled House's impeachment probe against Biden was based on a lie and they should drop it in light of the FBI source's arrest. President Biden also demanded that the inquiry be dropped, citing that Smirnov was lying.

Internet slams Jamie Raskin

Outraged over Raskin's remarks about the Biden impeachment inquiry being a product of Russian propaganda, netizens blasted the lawmaker for his lack of credibility.

One user wrote, "The problem is Raskin is not credible. He previously endorsed the confidential source and now he says the source is bad. Time for him to be removed from the committee."

Another person remarked, "Literally 2016 all over again, with a vengeance."

"Democrats need to come up with something better than Russia Russia Russia now that they are in charge," a third response read.

A Facebook user commented, "Raskin, Goldman and most of the Democrat politicians and bureaucrats lie, lie, lie. I've watched them in the hearings. They cover up, lie, deny the criminal and treasonous acts of Biden and his accomplices."

"Reskin needs to resign! He has lied every since he’s been in Congress," another individual opined.

Another individual added, "Here you go again with your usual fabrications. Nothing you say is ever true. WHO keeps voting for you? What is their problem that they don’t see who you really are?"
