Olivia Munn urged mom Kim Munn to get MRI after risk test showed 26.2% score

After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023, Munn said she asked both her mother and sister to take the Breast Cancer Lifetime Risk Assessment test.

“My mother scored 26.2%. Her yearly mammogram had just come out clear but because of that high score I insisted she get an MRI,” Olivia shared in her Instagram post Wednesday.

“Shortly after that MRI, my mother was diagnosed with Stage 1 Her 2 breast cancer,” Munn added.

She said Kim has already completed 12 rounds of chemotherapy and will continue receiving Herceptin, a targeted therapy drug used to treat HER2-positive breast cancer, through the fall.

Olivia Munn says watching loved ones suffer is 'even more heartbreaking'

Reflecting on their shared journey, Munn said, “From my mom being there after my double mastectomy to me being there after hers. From me having to find an oncologist, to my mom and I sharing one. I can tell you this: going through cancer is really hard.”

She added, “But there’s something about watching a loved one go through it that is even more heartbreaking.”

Munn also talked about caring for her mother during chemotherapy. “I spent many nights taking care of my mom when the chemo became too much, wishing I could fight the fight for her, even if only for a day to give her a little break,” she continued. “It’s no small feat to realize you can’t do it for them.”

“I went from feeling completely fine one day, to waking up in a hospital bed after a 10-hour surgery the next,” Munn wrote earlier via Instagram.

She also thanked her husband, John Mulaney, for his unwavering support.

“Thank you for being there before I went into each surgery and when I woke up, always placing framed photos of our little boy Malcolm so it would be the first thing I saw,” she wrote at the time.
