Incident comes amid heightened scrutiny
The shooting comes just days after a federal immigration officer fatally shot a Mexican immigrant during a traffic stop in Houston, an incident that triggered protests and renewed calls for greater transparency and accountability in federal immigration enforcement operations.
The Houston shooting occurred during an ICE enforcement operation in which federal officers attempted to stop a vehicle driven by Mexican national Lorenzo Salgado Araujo.

The Department of Homeland Security said the officer fired in self-defense after alleging that Salgado Araujo used his vehicle as a weapon.
His family, witnesses and immigrant rights groups have disputed that account, and the FBI and DHS are investigating the shooting.
