From childhood memories to final goodbye: Meghan McCain's emotional tribute to Lindsey Graham
WASHINGTON,DC: TV personality Meghan McCain paid an emotional tribute to the late Senator Lindsey Graham on Sunday, July 12, sharing memories that stretched back to her childhood while acknowledging that their once-close relationship changed over time.
In a lengthy post on X following Graham's death, McCain described the veteran South Carolina senator as one of the most unforgettable personalities in American politics, someone she said could light up any room and leave no conversation without laughter.
The first time I met Lindsey Graham, I was 11 years old in a hotel lobby and he had just attended a political event with my Dad. He sat down next to me and told me that he loved my Dad. I remember liking his deep southern accent and smile and immediately felt comfortable around… pic.twitter.com/03mCGn9Xxl

McCain recalls first meeting with Graham
McCain recalled first meeting Graham when she was just 11 years old after he attended a political event with her father, the late Senator John McCain.
She remembered the encounter vividly, saying Graham sat beside her in a hotel lobby and immediately began speaking warmly about her father.
According to McCain, his Southern accent, easy smile and relaxed manner stood out from the many political figures she regularly encountered during her father's career.
From that point onward, Graham became a constant presence in the McCain family's life.
McCain reflected on the decades-long friendship shared by Graham, John McCain and former Senator Joe Lieberman.
The trio became widely known on Capitol Hill as the "Three Amigos," united by their foreign policy views and close personal bond.
Describing the dynamic between them, McCain wrote that her father was "the soul," Lieberman "the heart," while Graham supplied "the fire and humor."
She said watching that friendship unfold gave her a rare glimpse into genuine loyalty in American politics.
McCain's emotional tribute to Graham
Rather than focusing on Graham's political career, McCain devoted much of her message to his personality away from the Senate floor.
She described him as endlessly entertaining, saying dinner conversations with Graham rarely ended on time because he and her father would continue telling stories long after restaurants were ready to close.
"He was literally never, ever boring," she wrote, adding that he could have easily built a career as a stand-up comedian if he had chosen a different path.
She also recalled how Graham and her father happily posed for photographs, chatted with strangers and treated every waiter and staff member with enthusiasm.
McCain credited Graham with remaining close to her family after Senator John McCain died in 2018.
Meghan McCain reveals 'ties turned complex'
Despite the overwhelmingly affectionate memories, McCain acknowledged that her personal relationship with Graham was not without complications in later years.
Without explaining what caused the distance, she admitted their bond eventually became "complex."
Rather than revisiting those differences, however, McCain said she wanted to remember the happier chapters of their friendship.
"I choose to remember the endless laughter and joy he brought to my family," she wrote.
McCain ended her tribute with a deeply personal image, saying she hopes Graham has reunited with her father and Joe Lieberman.
She imagined the three longtime friends together once again, sharing drinks, fishing and picking up conversations where they had left off decades earlier.
