WASHINGTON, DC: President Joe Biden, in a White House statement, threatened he would veto a standalone bill for an aid package to Israel as House Republicans attempt to undermine a long-awaited bipartisan border deal, reported CNN.

"The Administration spent months working with a bipartisan group of Senators to reach a national security agreement that secures the border and provides support for the people of Ukraine and Israel, while also providing much-needed humanitarian assistance to civilians affected by conflicts around the world," the White House wrote in a statement issued on Monday, February 5.

The statement further criticized the bill, labeling it "another cynical political maneuver" that deviates the focus from working to address the "most pressing security challenges."

"The security of Israel should be sacred, not a political game," the statement added.

The long-sought border bill, released on February 4, received criticisms from Republicans, including former President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson. Trump branded the bill as a "Death Wish" for the Republican Party while Johnson claimed it was "worse than we expected and won't come close to ending the border catastrophe."

The $118 billion package for the border, however, contained financial aid for Ukraine and Israel besides funding to secure the US-Mexicon border.

Speaker Mike Johnson slams Biden for his plan to veto the bill

House Speaker Johnson slammed the president over his decision to reject the standalone aid package to Israel.

Speaking to CNN's Manu Raju on February 4, the speaker said Biden's threat was "a betrayal of our great ally and friend Israel in their time of desperate need."

The US has allocated billions in military aid to Israel since October 7, following the Jewish state's involvement in an ongoing war with Hamas.

"I mean, Israel is at war, they're fighting for their very existence. And the idea that Joe Biden would suggest that he would not send a clean funding measure to assist them is just outrageous. And I think he's gonna hear quite a bit about that being said that veto threat," Johnson added.

The friction between the speaker and the president comes amid the Biden administration's fears of a clash with the GOP-led House that could kill the border bill.

Internet reacts to Biden's threat

Outraged at Biden's decision to veto an aid package bill to Israel, a key US ally, netizens slammed the president, accusing him of showing his true colors.

One user wrote, "So he doesn’t care about Israel. Hope voters remember this! He only cares about votes not life."

Another user remarked, "This is actually evil. There are American hostages there too. Biden wants the votes of terrorist supporters more than he wants to help our closest ally. WOW."

"Biden is desperate because of his base hates Israel," a third user added. Another response read, "This is lunacy."

One user said, "True colors coming out." Another user shared a similar opinion, "I'd put nothing past him .showing his true colours."
