Oscars Worst Dressed: From Julianne Hough's Alexandre Vauthier pants to Emily Blunt's Schiaparelli gown
Oscars 2024 Worst Dressed: From Billie Eilish's Chanel schoolgirl fiasco to Melissa McCarthy's red-and-pink debacle
Hollywood's greatest and brightest stars graced the Oscars 2024 on Sunday, March 10, but it was also the set for some of the most outrageous red carpet gaffes of the season. Several celebrities showed up dressed very inadequately, with 'Oppenheimer' star Emily Blunt among the earliest guests to arrive at the ceremony with an attire that fell short of expectations. Here's a look at the worst-dressed stars at the 2024 Oscars who left us somewhat perplexed.
1. Emily Blunt's couture gown fails to impress
Though Emily Blunt's prickly character from 'The Devil Wears Prada' was usually well-groomed, the actor showed up at the 2024 Academy Awards wearing one of the most contentious outfits of the evening. Blunt—who was nominated for the first time for her role in 'Oppenheimer'—wore a cream-colored Schiaparelli couture gown, adorned with Tiffany jewels. Fans were quick to point out that the gown's shimmering crystal strands beneath the waist initially gave the impression of underwear.
2. Billie Eilish's disastrous schoolgirl look
Billie Eilish is known for her daring wardrobe choices, but at this year's Academy Awards, she caught people's attention for the wrong reasons. Dressed in a rigid black blazer, white button-down, and a tweed black-and-white Chanel skirt, the 22-year-old appeared more like a wicked Catholic schoolgirl than a music icon. Adding to the schoolgirl appearance, her partially scrunched-down black heels and white calf-length socks below did not help the image.
3. Melissa McCarthy's awful read-and-pink combo
Comedian Melissa McCarthy wore a striking red-and-pink gown that made a statement. If not for the large expanses of fuchsia pink material that ran along the scarlet sleeves, the outfit would have been extremely stylish, giving the impression that the star had a sheet hot-glued to her at the last minute. She accessorized her statement ensemble with a glittery necklace, several rings, and dangling earrings from Christian Siriano and Jacob & Co.
4. Florence Pugh's underwhelming red-carpet dress
The 'Oppenheimer' and 'Dune: Part Two' star has become a fixture on the red carpet. Florence Pugh looked stunning, but the dress was undoubtedly not appropriate for Sunday's red carpet. The silvery, sparkling custom gown was by Del Core, a contemporary atelier out of Milan. The color did not genuinely suit her, and the bodice was overly elaborate and ridiculous in appearance. However, the jewelry was incredibly well-chosen, and the hair and makeup were stunning.
5. Erika Alexander's confusing attire
'The Cosby Show' star Erika Alexander was among the initial guests who failed to make an impression with her group on Sunday night. The 54-year-old writer and actor had on a rather confusing Christian Siriano gown with a black skirt adorned in pastel tulle and a simple white strapless silhouette. It would have been extremely elegant if it were not for the massive tutu-style skirt wrapped around her waist and covering most of the simple dress design underneath.
6. Hailee Steinfeld's busty goof-up
Hailee Steinfeld entertained the cameras by putting on a show with her butterfly sleeves. The entire design, including the wrist cuffs and sweetheart neckline, was covered with gilded leaf appliques. The Elie Saab couture gown was one of those dresses that looks kind of good at first, but the more one stares at it, the stranger and goofier it looks. Steinfeld definitely loved the flowy skirt, and the color pattern was gorgeous. However, the bust appeared somewhat crafted and excessively detailed.
7. Julianne Hough's oversized pants
The 'Dancing with the Stars' host, however, had a somewhat different choice for Sunday's Academy Awards in Los Angeles as Julianne Hough chose to wear jeans instead of a gown. Hough donned a white jumpsuit by Alexandre Vauthier couture, adorned with a glittering bodice in gold and silver. Her jumpsuit appeared to be a gown due to the optical illusion created by the voluminous pants. However, Hough flaunted her playful ensemble on the red carpet, letting everyone know that she was wearing pants.
8. Dwayne Johnson's metallic fashion fail
During his time on the red carpet, The Rock, aka Dwayne Johnson, sported a very unusual metallic silver Dolce & Gabbana outfit. For the awards show, Johnson wore a satin steel colored suit that he matched with a maroon shirt also made of the same material.
9. Becky G's strapless let-down
Singer Becky G looked more like she was going to a Moulin Rouge performance than a glitzy red carpet event owing to her extremely short dress with a bustier top. The 'Mamiii' singer appeared at the 2024 Oscars on March 10 in an off-the-shoulder Vera Wang strapless gown that included a thigh-high split. The singer accessorized with matching black shoes and full-length fingerless gloves in black.
10. Cynthia Erivo's puzzling green gown
Cynthia Erivo's debut on the red carpet created a sensation owing to the perplexing green gown that gave her the appearance of a 'Godzilla' cosplayer with the curious spikes that went down the back of the leather design. The strange outfit, a custom Louis Vuitton, even had a tail that sprinted over the carpet behind Erivo. With the dragon tail-like feel to it, the attire definitely registered as unique, especially when compared to anything else seen on the Oscars red carpet.
