Patti Smith says she's 'resting' after discharge from hospital following hospitalization due to 'sudden illness'

BOLONGA, ITALY: Patti Smith has recovered from a sudden illness in an Italy hospital and can perform after necessary rest. 

The rock legend was hospitalized in Bologna after falling ill during her tour.

Patti Smith had to cancel shows in Italy due to sudden illness 

Patti Smith, 76, has been discharged from the hospital after being treated for a “sudden illness” that forced her to cancel some of her shows in Italy.

The 'People Have the Power' singer was admitted to the emergency unit of the Sant’Orsola Hospital in Bologna on Monday, December 12.

Hospital press officer Ilaria Maria Di Battista told People what the head of the emergency unit, Dr Alessio Bertini, had said about Smith. He said: “She was very polite and collaborative with us. This made our job easier.”

Another hospital source noted, “Before leaving she hugged and thanked the medical staff for their assistance." He added, that one team member even drew "a laugh from her when he said not to forget to invite them to her next Italian concert.”

Patti Smith can perform 'after a necessary period of rest'

Battista also said that “after a necessary period of rest,” Smith should be able to perform again. This comes after the cancellation of the singer’s concert in Bologna as well as her show in Venice and book signing in Milan.

Teatro Duse announced the cancellation of Smith’s show that was scheduled for Tuesday, December 12.

“With great regret, we inform the kind audience that the [Patti Smith] concert scheduled for today 12 December 2023 at 9 pm will not be able to go on stage due to a sudden illness that struck the artist,” the venue wrote on Instagram.

The theater then added, “We are all sorry for the inconvenience caused by this news. Our best wishes for a speedy recovery go to the artist.”

Smith journeyed to Italy to perform her eight-date 'A Tour of Italian Days' tour but fell ill shortly after arriving in Bologna. During the evening of December 12, at roughly 6 pm local time, hotel staff at the Grand Hotel Majestic say that they were informed of a “person feeling unwell." The nature of her illness was not known.

In a post on Instagram after getting discharged from the Italy hospital, Smith was all thankful for hospital staffs "help and guidance." 

Smith wrote, "This is thanking all at the hospital for their help and guidance. I am so sorry that we had to cancel concerts in Bologna and Venice."

She added, "I will return to fulfill my happy obligations. This is also to thank all the medical teams globally, who attend to the people’s needs, especially those altruistically serving under fire, all healers, physicians, nurses, attendants."

"Also I want to thank everyone for sending messages of love and concern. I am resting, as the doctor ordered, grateful to have had such care, though being painfully aware that many are not so fortunate," she continued.
