LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM: Phil Collins shared a very heartbreaking update about himself while speaking for the latest issue of MOJO.

The retired Genesis musician said, “I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens. But I’m not hungry for it anymore. The thing is, I’ve been sick, I mean very sick…”

The singer suffered severe nerve damage after facing a spinal injury in 2007 that resulted in declining mobility.

Phil Collins shared his sadness over not being able to play drums

Phil Collins detailed his condition in a December documentary, ‘Phil Collins: Drummer First,’ where he said, “It’s still kind of sinking in. I’ve spent all my life playing drums. To suddenly not be able to do that is a shock.”

The 74-year-old also mentioned that if he “can’t do what I did as well as I did it, I’d rather relax and not do anything. If I wake up one day and I can hold a pair of drumsticks, then I’ll have a crack at it. But I just feel like I’ve used up my air miles.”

Besides, his son Nic shared, “I think that’s really what it is with my dad — is just this kind of sense of ‘you’re a drummer, you’re invincible, you do what you do.’ But you don’t know it’s gonna take a toll in the long run.”

Phil Collins was praised by former bandmate Peter Gabriel

Genesis' last concert happened in 2022 but instead of Phil Collins, Nic played drums while the record producer sang.

Former bandmate Peter Gabriel said, as per Page Six, “Phil wasn’t in as great a shape as he used to be, but they did a great job. Me going was a rite of passage, really. I’d been part of the creation of Genesis, so I wanted to be there at the end.”

In 2021, months after his retirement, Collins also spoke with BBC, where he stated, “I’m kind of physically challenged a bit, which is very frustrating ’cause, you know, I’d love to be playing up there with my son.”

“I can barely hold a stick with this hand, so there are certain physical things, which get in the way,” he said, before adding, “I don’t know if I want to go out on the road anymore.”
