PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA: Holden Trent, the Philadelphia Union goalkeeper, died on Saturday, October 26, at the age of 25, just months before he was about to get married to his fiancee, Brianna Losito. 

This sudden loss has sent shockwaves through the soccer community and left fans mourning a bright future that has now been cut short. 

Philadelphia Union pays tribute to Holden Trent

The Philadelphia Union announced Holden Trent's death in a heartfelt statement on their website. They described him as a "wonderful player and fierce competitor," but more importantly, as "a devoted son, brother, fiance, and teammate who made those around him better."

They extended their "greatest sympathies to his family, his fiancee, and his friends" and requested privacy during this difficult time.

They added that details regarding services and a celebration of life would be forthcoming, noting, "Our family is deeply touched to see and experience the love you all have for Holden."

Holden Trent and Brianna Losito were set to tie the knot in December 2025

Holden Trent and Brianna Losito were set to marry in just 419 days. The couple, who started dating in 2019 and had been engaged for a year, planned a wedding for December 20, 2025, at the William Aiken House in Charleston, South Carolina.

In December 2023, Losito shared a touching post on Instagram from their proposal in Florence, captioning it, "Siri, what’s yes in Italian?" She has yet to publicly address Trent's death.

The Major League Soccer (MLS) Commissioner Don Garber also issued a statement after Trent's death. It read, "Major League Soccer joins the Philadelphia Union and our entire soccer community in mourning the tragic passing of Union goalkeeper Holden Trent."

"A young goalkeeper with a bright future, Trent showcased determination and professionalism every day as he contributed to the close-knit goalkeeping unit at Philadelphia," added the statement. 

It concluded, "We extend our deepest condolences to his fiancée, his family and friends, his teammates and the entire Philadelphia Union community. MLS is coordinating with the club to provide players and family members with the resources and support they need during this tragic time."



 

A native of Greensboro, North Carolina, Trent began his college career at West Virginia before transferring to High Point University. There, he served as a senior captain, leading his team to its first-ever NCAA Tournament win.

He was selected No 28 overall by the Philadelphia Union in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft. Trent had yet to make his first-team debut. 

Soccer community honors Holden Trent's legacy

On Saturday, Philadelphia Union II honored Holden Trent by holding a moment of silence during a playoff match at Subaru Park, displaying his No 13 jersey.



 

His alma mater, High Point University, also paid tribute by showcasing his jersey during their game that evening. Fellow players and friends have also paid tribute to Trent on social media.



 

Trent's unexpected death follows a period of hospitalization; he was reported to have been in intensive care shortly after the conclusion of the Union's season. The exact cause of his death has not been publicly disclosed.
