Pope Leo orders Vatican scrutiny of AI, urges protection of 'human dignity'
VATICAN CITY, VATICAN: Artificial intelligence has officially moved to the center of the Vatican’s agenda after Pope Leo XIV unveiled a new internal initiative aimed at studying how rapidly advancing technology could reshape humanity.
The move signals that the Catholic Church does not intend to watch the AI revolution from the sidelines.
Instead, Pope Leo is positioning the Vatican as an active moral voice in a debate increasingly dominated by governments, billion-dollar tech firms and global power politics.

Vatican’s AI pivot signals bigger fight
The Vatican confirmed that Pope Leo has established a dedicated internal study group tasked with examining artificial intelligence through the lens of ethics, human dignity, labor, truth, and peace.
The decision marks one of the boldest institutional steps yet taken by the Catholic Church on emerging technology and it comes at a moment when AI is transforming industries faster than governments can regulate it.
Church officials reportedly said the initiative was born out of growing concern over AI’s expanding role in everyday life and its potential to fundamentally alter how human beings work, communicate, create and even understand reality itself.
The move is not being framed as anti-technology. Instead, Leo appears to be drawing a line between technological progress and what he believes should remain fundamentally human.
In one of his earliest remarks on the issue, the pontiff warned that innovation without moral boundaries could lead humanity into dangerous territory.
“The Church must offer its social teaching to confront the challenges posed by artificial intelligence on human dignity, justice, and labor,” Leo said during remarks shortly after becoming pope.
He is reportedly especially concerned about AI-generated misinformation and the erosion of trust in truth itself, an issue he views not simply as political, but spiritual.
That concern is expected to shape his first major encyclical, which Vatican officials say will focus heavily on technology’s impact on civilization.
Symbolism behind Pope's AI initiative
The Vatican announcement came exactly 135 years after Pope Leo XIII issued Rerum Novarum, the landmark document that challenged unchecked industrial capitalism and became the foundation of modern Catholic social teaching.
Now, Leo XIV appears ready to make a similar intervention for the digital age.
His message is clear: AI may create extraordinary opportunities, but without ethical safeguards, it could also deepen injustice, replace human judgment, undermine workers, and reshape warfare in ways humanity may struggle to control.
Experts close to the Church reportedly believe Leo wants the Vatican to act as what one academic described as “the adult in the room” as global powers race to dominate AI.
Pope Leo has recently raised alarms over AI’s role in modern conflicts, including the use of autonomous systems, military drones, and machine-assisted battlefield targeting.
“What is happening in today’s wars shows an inhuman evolution in the relationship between conflict and technology,” Leo said during a recent academic address.
He has also privately cautioned clergy against becoming dependent on AI tools for spiritual work, reportedly telling priests that technology must never replace genuine human reflection, pastoral care, or moral responsibility.
At the same time, the pope has acknowledged AI’s potential in healthcare, scientific discovery, and education, provided human beings remain firmly in control.
