LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Celebrities including Billie Eilish, Ramy Youssef, and Mark Ruffalo adorned red pins during the Academy Awards night, signifying their support for an instant and permanent cessation of Israel's conflict with Gaza.

Youssef was among the over 400 celebrities who signed an open letter encouraging President Joe Biden to push for a ceasefire as part of Artists4Ceasefire, a campaign that organized the pins, the New York Times reports.

Ramy Youssef calls for 'permanent ceasefire in Gaza'

Presenter and star of the Oscar-nominated film 'Poor Things,' Ramy Youssef, told Variety from the red carpet, "We’re calling for an immediate, permanent cease-fire in Gaza. We’re calling for peace and justice—lasting justice—for the people of Palestine."

"It’s a universal message of, ‘Let’s stop killing kids. Let’s not be part of more war,’" Youssef added.

He went on to say, "There’s a lot of talking heads on the news, this is a space of talking hearts. We’re trying to have this big beam to humanity."

Other A-listers including Ava DuVernay, Mark Ronson, Mahershala Ali, and Riz Ahmed were among those sporting the badge on the 2024 Oscars red carpet, which features an image of a hand around a small black heart.

The group Artists4Ceasefire reportedly told the New York Times in a statement that the red lapel buttons represent a demand for more humanitarian help and the release of "all hostages."

According to the group's statement, the "pin symbolizes collective support for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the release of all of the hostages, and for the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza. Compassion must prevail."

The same pins were worn by Boygenius members Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker at the Grammy Awards in February 2024. Actors Tony Shalhoub and Ebon Moss-Bachrach also wore them at the most recent SAG Awards, per Vanity Fair.

Celebs like Mark Ruffalo, Cate Blanchett, Quinta Brunson, and Kristen Stewart supported an open letter that 55 prominent artists and representatives of the entertainment industry wrote in October 2023 demanding Joe Biden to demand a ceasefire in Gaza and Israel.

The letter read, "We ask that, as President of the United States, you call for an immediate de-escalation and ceasefire in Gaza and Israel before another life is lost."

"We believe all life is sacred, no matter faith or ethnicity and we condemn the killing of Palestinian and Israeli civilians," read the statement.
