MANHATTAN, NEW YORK CITY: Although former congressman George Santos might have served as a wellspring of comedic fodder for both comedians and media figures during his brief time in office, Seth Meyers and MSNBC’s Chris Hayes are fairly certain that Santos won't leave behind a particularly memorable legacy.

Chris Hayes appeared on 'Late Night' on the evening of February 13 when Long Island geared up for its special election to fill Santos' vacated seat following his congressional removal last year.

Chris Hayes and Seth Meyers reflect on George Santos and the political situation

Hayes quipped, "Remember that guy?" when Meyers mentioned Santos, remarking, "That guy produced a lot of content for both of us."

While Meyers acknowledged this, he appended a caveat to the observation.

"A lot of really — you feel like content that’s not gonna last,” Meyers said. “I think if George Santos happened 100 years ago, there would’ve been a million books and a thousand movies, and I think he’s just lost to history," he added.

Hayes concurred, acknowledging that Meyers likely had a point, noting that Santos would likely be "the answer to trivia questions," adding, "I mean, look, the way our politics are going, he could run for Senate."

"They’re gonna be incorrect trivia questions,” Meyers said added, “Like, who was the first man on the moon? It’s like ‘I know George Santos said it was him…?'".

The duo conversation then touched upon the peculiar trend observed in recent special elections, where Democrats have been outperforming historical expectations, despite holding the White House—an anomaly that defies conventional political wisdom.

Hayes attributed this trend to a complex interplay of factors, including heightened Democratic engagement and a departure from the narrative of impending Democratic doom perpetuated by some media outlets.

He said, "Democrats have been outperforming in special elections by anywhere between two to 10 points time and time and time again. And it cuts against historical trends and also, I think, cuts against a little bit of the narrative that, like, Democrats are sleepwalking into disaster, which has been definitely the sort of dominant story in the press the last week".
