During an appearance on 'The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon', Jimmy Fallon asked Renee Zellweger, "Mark Darcy, Colin Firth's character, has passed away, How did you react when you read that?"

Zellweger responded, "I mean, I read the book, I read the script, we did the table reading. I knew what was going to happen but when Colin was standing there in all his Mark Darcy finery with his Mark Darcy little briefcase."

She recalled, "I started welling up and I thought, 'Oh, my God, I'm a crazy person. He's just a character. This is just a character in a movie'."

Renee Zellweger originally introduced the character Bridget Jones to audiences on the big screen with 'Bridget Jones's Diary' in 2001, and as she geared up to step into the character’s shoes for a fourth time, she admitted that Bridget’s quirks have influenced her in unexpected ways over the years.

According to Renee Zellweger, the long gaps between films in the beloved rom-com franchise were necessary for telling the right story.

Speaking with The Wrap, Zellweger explained why the passage of time played a crucial role in shaping each chapter of Bridget’s life.

"I love it. I love the time in between," she shared and added, "Because, well, like all of us, we change, and every reconnection with her in the different chapters of her life is a rediscovery, because we’re never the same from one moment in our lives to the next."

The newest film, 'Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy', arrives on Peacock this Friday and follows Bridget as she navigates life as a widow and mother of two. Colin Firth (Mark Darcy) is gone but fans will still see him just in an unexpected way.

Looking back, the franchise has had some massive time jumps. The original 'Bridget Jones’s Diary' premiered in 2001, followed by 'Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason' in 2004. But after more than a decade, 'Bridget Jones’s Baby' arrived in 2016, giving audiences a much older and wiser Bridget.

Zellweger finds that evolution fascinating. "It’s so interesting to sort of explore how what’s happened in the interim to this character might change her perspective, her values, how she carries herself, how she communicates, and the same is true from my own experiences, like, what’s in there to draw from this time and what’s relatable this time?”

But will there be another sequel in the distant future? Maybe not.

"Well, Helen (Fielding, Bridget Jones creator) has said that she’s finished," Zellweger admitted and stated, "She said this is the last, so we’ll see."
