RFK Jr seeks meeting with Kamala Harris to discuss endorsement and cabinet position
WASHINGTON, DC: Independent presidential candidate Robert F Kennedy Jr attempted to fix a meeting with Democratic Presidential candidate Kamala Harris last week to discuss the chances of serving as a Cabinet secretary in her administration if he endorsed her and withdrew from the race.
President Joe Biden stepped down from the presidential race in July following a dismal debate performance against GOP candidate Donald Trump. The Democrats later announced Harris as their new presidential pick, according to the Washington Post.
RFK Jr seeks meeting with Kamala Harris
People familiar with the conversations said that Kamala Harris and her advisers have neither responded with an offer to meet nor shown interest in the proposal.
Kennedy told the Washington Post that he is continuing to campaign with the expectation of defeating both Trump and Harris through regular interview appearances, releasing an "America Strong" plan for bipartisan governance, and planning rallies in states such as Arizona and Nebraska.
However, he is also considering the possibility of withdrawing from the race if he finds another way to achieve the change he seeks for the country, according to his advisers.
RFK Jr said, "From the beginning of this campaign, we were saying people should be talking to each other. That is the only way of unifying the country."
He added that he hopes Harris reconsiders his offer of a meeting. He said, "I think it is a strategic mistake for them. That’s my perspective. I think they ought to be looking at every opportunity. I think it is going to be a very close race."
A Kennedy campaign spokesperson informed the New York Post that RFK Jr is open to making the same proposal to Trump. The spokesperson said, "Mr Kennedy is willing to meet with leaders of both parties to discuss the possibility of a unity government."
Trump reportedly met with RFK Jr in Milwaukee in July, on the first day of the Republican National Convention, to gain his endorsement.
RFK Jr removed from the New York ballot
A New York judge ruled on Monday, August 12, that RFK Jr cannot appear on New York's November ballot, siding with a Democratic-backed political action committee that challenged his candidacy based on the residence he listed to qualify, according to USA Today.
New York Justice Christina Ryba ruled that RFK Jr falsely claimed on his nominating petition that his "place of residence" is in Katonah, NY, outside of New York City, where he rents a spare bedroom rather than his home in California.
Ryba ruled the nominating petition submitted by RFK Jr and running-mate Nicole Shanahan invalid because of the false residency claim. She also ordered the New York State Board of Elections not to place the Kennedy-Shanahan ticket on the 2024 ballot.
RFK Jr trolled as he tries to meet Kamala Harris to discuss endorsement
Several internet users slammed RFK Jr as he tried to fix a meeting with Kamala Harris to discuss the chances of serving in her administration as a Cabinet secretary if he endorsed her and stepped down from the race.
Some online comments read, "This makes me lose all respect for Kennedy considering it’s been the democrats that have fought him from the beginning of his campaign" and "Really, really disappointing. How can you work so hard to get on the ballot, then be willing to sell yourself to one of the candidates?" [sic]
A person also stated, "The Dems (and Harris) kneecapped his campaign, and he still wants to talk to them? Pretty low, even for a Kennedy," whereas one mentioned, "He’s lost whatever credibility he had left."
A user also wrote, "Why are so many people acting surprised that a Kennedy could behave in a selfish, underhanded, and dishonorable manner?" while one commented, "After what he did to that cub, don’t put him in charge of the cabinet position that overseas Jellystone Park. Boo-boo is freaked out over all this."
A person also added, "If in fact, this is true, the man has no self-respect and integrity and is as loathsome as Cackling Harris and Cowardly Walz."
