WASHINGTON, DC: Robert F Kennedy Jr’s wife, Cheryl Hines, discussed the stresses of being married to a prominent political figure on Saturday, November 22, 2025.

While speaking to Page 6, she recalled the attempted assassination of Donald Trump in July 2024, and meeting the president along with RFK Jr soon after the attack.

Hines said it made her realize that things could change in an instant. She revealed that the “stress” of the situation landed her in urgent care as she “broke out in hives” and her “lips started swelling.”

Cheryl Hines on RFK Jr being unprotected during his candidacy

During the interview, the ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ actress said that she had always been afraid for her husband’s life, considering the long list of assassinations that targeted the Kennedy family. Cheryl said that it was “unacceptable” that RFK Jr didn’t initially get Secret Service protection as a presidential candidate.

Recalling that time in her life, she said that she didn’t know what was going to happen, so she used to stay dressed till she was ready for bed. Hines added that she used to receive calls about people showing up to RFK Jr’s rallies with guns and asking to see Bobby.

“So it was a real concern,” she added.

Cheryl Hines further spoke about the attack on Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, after which Joe Biden announced protection for her husband. While speaking of their meeting, she said that Trump had a “bandage on his ear,” which made her realize how close the bullet had been to his temple. It also made her think about how quickly things could go wrong.

“And I knew that Bobby was out there every day campaigning just like President Trump was doing,” she added.

She recalled the stressful situation, noting that her “body went into overdrive” and she broke out in hives. Later that day, RFK Jr wanted to drop out as a candidate and endorse Trump. She revealed that the two connected greatly and had common goals, but that the stress “was a lot.”

Cheryl Hines chimes in on fallout with the Kennedys

In January 2025, RFK Jr was nominated as the Secretary of Health and Human Services.

The Kennedy family did not take the news well and publicly called out Cheryl Hines’ husband. Hines said that it was “very hard” since she loves her husband’s family. She also said that their lack of support for his candidacy was “understandable,” however, she was upset by their public criticism.

“It added to the security risk that he was taking. And I found it to be very upsetting,” she said.
