Rob Reiner’s son Nick felt entitled and 'didn’t want to work,’ says source
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Days after filmmaker Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife Michele Reiner, , 70, were found dead inside their Brentwood home, new details have emerged about their son Nick Reiner, who has been charged in their killings.
According to a source cited PEOPLE, Reiner struggled for years with addiction, expectations, and a sense of entitlement that strained his relationship with his parents. The source described Nick as someone who “didn’t want to work” but still expected to be loved and supported in the same way as the rest of his family.
The source said Nick wanted a version of life that never materialized and had difficulty taking responsibility for himself. “He didn’t want to do any work but expected to be loved the way the rest of his family was,” the source told the publication.
Source says Nick Reiner struggled with expectations and identity
The source added that Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner carried deep guilt over their inability to help their son stabilize his life. According to the source, the couple felt they had failed Nick despite years of trying to support him through repeated attempts at recovery.
They hoped that 'Being Charlie,' the 2015 film co-written by Nick Reiner and directed by his father, would help him gain confidence and find his footing in the entertainment industry. The film, which drew from Nick’s personal experiences with addiction, was seen by the family as a potential turning point.
By the age of 22, Nick Reiner had reportedly entered rehab more than 18 times. In a 2016 podcast appearance, he spoke candidly about growing up under the shadow of his famous father and grandfather, legendary comedian Carl Reiner.
“I had no identity, and I had no passions,” Nick said at the time. He explained that fame shaped how he saw himself, leaving him searching for meaning elsewhere. He said he attempted to carve out his own identity through rebellion and substance abuse, describing it as an angry and destructive persona.
