Robert Garcia blasts Donald Trump for 'loyalist' contracts in Reflecting Pool fiasco
WASHINGTON, DC: A multimillion-dollar renovation of the iconic Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has turned into a fresh political fight in Washington, with a senior House Democrat accusing President Donald Trump of steering taxpayer-funded work to allies while delivering a project now plagued by algae, peeling paint and mounting questions.
The controversy intensified on Wednesday, June 24, after Rep Robert Garcia launched a formal effort to obtain records from the contractors behind the troubled makeover.

Robert Garcia demands answers on $14 million contracts
Garcia, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, is demanding detailed explanations from the two companies that received more than $14 million in federal work connected to the Reflecting Pool renovation.
His central allegation is not simply that the project ran into problems. It is that the contracts themselves deserve scrutiny.
In letters sent to the firms involved, Garcia argued that the administration bypassed normal competitive processes and handed major government work to individuals and businesses with ties to Trump.
He described the situation as an example of taxpayer money being spent on a project that appears to be struggling almost immediately after completion.
“The president should be focused on making life more affordable for the American people, not rewarding his loyalists with government contracts and wasting taxpayer money on failing projects,” Garcia said.
He argues that Americans deserve answers about why a high-profile renovation is already facing repair work.
The California lawmaker is seeking documents and information that could shed light on how the contracts were awarded, who approved them and what oversight existed during the project.
Contractors push back
The companies at the center of the controversy insist the situation is being mischaracterized.
One contractor involved in water treatment reportedly said the discoloration is linked to algae-remediation efforts rather than a failure of its technology.
According to the company, algae was successfully treated, leaving behind material that must now be removed through a separate cleaning process.
Meanwhile, the firm responsible for the pool's new coating has acknowledged that some repairs are needed but argues the affected areas represent only a tiny portion of the overall project.

The company maintains that the issues do not signal a failure of the installation and says it plans to carry out corrective work under warranty once the pool is drained.
Vandalism claim sparks dispute
The dispute comes as images of green water and sections of damaged coating at the Reflecting Pool have circulated widely online, fueling criticism from Trump's opponents and raising questions about the quality of the work.
Trump has offered a very different explanation for at least some of the damage.
The president recently argued that the pool had been deliberately vandalized, claiming authorities arrested six people and issued citations to several others.
Trump has described extensive damage to the pool's lining and suggested the destruction was intentional rather than the result of construction failures.
