Ryan O'Neal allegedly knew he didn't have 'much time', wanted to reconnect with estranged son Redmond
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Actor Ryan O'Neal hoped to make peace with his troubled son Redmond O'Neal, who supposedly refused to give him the time of day, before the 82-year-old died away on Friday, December 8.
Recently, the 'Love Story' actor, who has four children, mentioned his distressed son Redmond — whom he shared with his former partner actress Farrah Fawcett — as the sole beneficiary of his living trust, per Radar Online.
However, it is not yet revealed if the 'Love Story' star altered his trust before his death, which was announced on December 8 by his son Patrick O'Neal on Instagram.
Sources claim Ryan O'Neal was desperate to hug troubled son Redmond
It took long for Ryan to mend his ties with his children. Tatum and Griffin were two of his four children from his first marriage to actress Joanna Moore, whom he divorced in 1967.
Following his split with Moore, he married actress Leigh Taylor-Young, with whom he had a son, Patrick, before divorcing her in 1971. In 1985, he and Farrah Fawcett eventually welcomed a third son, Redmond.
On her deathbed, Ryan supposedly promised his ex-partner Fawcett that he would look after their only kid, Redmond. The couple never got married despite having an official relationship from 1979 until 1997.
Redmond, meanwhile, has been detained in a state psychiatric hospital for more than three years following allegations that he committed several misdemeanors, including robbing a convenience shop.
The 'Paper Moon' actor told Vanity Fair in 2009: "I’m a hopeless father. I don’t know why. I don’t think I was supposed to be a father."
According to insiders, the unwell 'Paper Moon' actor craved to embrace and visit his troubling 38-year-old son. He purportedly wanted to apologize to Redmond for breaking his promise.
According to one insider, Ryan allegedly beat himself up over how Redmond's life had fallen apart over time.
The insider said, "Ryan has made a lot of mistakes in his life, but his greatest sorrow is not being able to honor his vow to Farrah," per Radar Online.
"Now Ryan doesn’t believe he has much time left, and he wants to hug Redmond and tell him how sorry he is he couldn’t keep his promise to his mother," the insider added at the time.
In 2008, Ryan was detained on drug allegations along with his son, Redmond, after police discovered meth at their Malibu residence.
Redmond had a history of substance abuse and also held his parents responsible for his problems.
He was imprisoned when his mother died from cancer in 2009, and recently, he was found not fit to face trial for multiple crimes, including attempted murder and armed robbery, and was locked up in a mental health facility.
Ryan O'Neal named son Redmond as the only beneficiary of his trust
Although the only beneficiary of the 'O'Neal Living Trust' is Ryan's troublesome son, it is unknown to whom the late 'Paper Moon' actor left his assets.
In 2013, Ryan's deed declared, "The Trustee shall distribute all of my tangible personal property, except my two Ernie Barnes paintings, to Redmond."
Fawcett left a trust fund in her will for her son Redmond. There are several restrictions and conditions regarding the $4.5 million trust fund.
According to ZacJohnson.com, Redmond only has access to the interest the trust earns; the trustee retains financial authority.
Redmond was declared mentally "incompetent" and unsuitable to stand trial. He was diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and antisocial personality disorder.
Redmond was transferred to a state mental health facility, where he continues to receive care.
