LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Sabrina Carpenter poured her deepest emotions into 'Emails I Can’t Send' before releasing her Grammy-winning album 'Short n’ Sweet.'
The former Disney Channel star described the project as her “first big-girl album,” using heartbreak as a creative force behind her songs.
Sabrina Carpenter opens up on her 'biggest heartbreak to date'
Sabrina Carpenter described the relationship that inspired 'Emails' as a defining moment in her life.
“My biggest heartbreak to date,” she said of the experience that shaped the album.
She acknowledged the impact of that heartbreak, calling it “my first real one,” in an interview published by Vogue on February 11.
“I hate to say that. It definitely makes all my exes before that feel like s**t. I don’t mean to do that," she added.
The 'Espresso' singer shared how this heartbreak introduced her to a new level of emotional pain.
“I just think in a sense of really understanding the grieving-someone-that’s-alive feeling,” she continued, adding “I never felt that until this one.”

After channeling those emotions into her music, Sabrina reached a new level of pop stardom. “That was my first time,” the 25-year-old said, “really getting to sit and steer the whole thing.”
Sabrina Carpenter embraced self-expression in a new era
As she explored her creativity, Sabrina Carpenter leaned into her personal style, blending glamour, playfulness, and even raunchiness into her work.
This shift led to the creation of the fan-favorite 'Nonsense outros,' according to People.
“The whole album’s a heartbreak album, and then ‘Nonsense’ is sort of like, ‘Maybe I can fall in love again,’” she said of the album’s N 1 hit. “It’s a very funny, unserious song,” Carpenter added.

During her 'Emails I Can’t Send Tour', she added a unique twist by improvising a different outro for Nonsense at each show.
Sabrina Carpenter rejected industry expectations early on
Expressing her authentic self was something Sabrina Carpenter aimed for since she began her career at a young age.
The 'Girl Meets World' alum recalled being told to limit herself to a single genre to maintain a cohesive artistic identity.
“I’m such a stubborn little spit,” she said, adding “I remembered growing up, and a lot of people telling me, ‘You have to stay in your lane and pick your genre, otherwise you’re not a cohesive artist and you don’t know who you are.’ And that always bugged me.”
"I think they taught me a little bit more wordplay and a couple more innuendos,” she said of her improvised 'Nonsense outros.'
"That might have bled into the next album. But it wasn’t because of that song. If anything I was kind of conscious of not doing ‘Nonsense’ 2.0. But I was happy that people felt they got an unfiltered version of me, and they weren’t running from it," she added, E! News reported.
