Sam Neill explains why he refuses to use supermarket self-checkouts
Sam Neill shared, "Call me old-fashioned, but I refuse to check out my own groceries at a supermarket. Every time I check out something for myself, I’m doing someone out of a job. I want a human being to assist me."
He continued, "I don’t think that’s too much to ask. And if robots and self-serving is going to do all the work everywhere, who's going to be buying the groceries at the checkout? It's an old-fashioned question, but it's a legitimate one, I think."

The actor expressed concern that automation is rapidly replacing people with machines.
A lot of his 745,000 Instagram followers seemed to share his sentiment, with many chiming in about how self-checkouts have stripped away the personal touch.
Internet agrees with Sam Neill as he rants about self-service kiosks
Sam Neill's old-school stance on checking out at supermarkets resonated with his followers, who chimed in with passionate support and nostalgia for simpler times in comments section of his Instagram post.
One praised the sentiment, saying, "I agree. And did you know in the Netherlands they have a slow line that’s intentionally designed for largely elderly people who maybe don’t get out of the house much during the day, maybe they don’t have anyone to talk to, and it’s the cashier’s job to engage them in conversation?! Let’s invest in humanity."
Another wrote, "Agree 100% and would like to add we need more human interactions to regain some of the empathy, kindness, compassion, and politeness that seem to be evaporating the last few years."
Others reflected on how small moments can make a big difference, with one expressing, "How lovely it is to have someone say hello, thanks, and have a nice day when one is at the store.:
"If we’re forced to do self-checkout, there should be at least a 15% discount since they’re not paying a checkout person," an individual wrote, while another shared, "It's the interaction. We were all isolated during covid and this robotic system has got to go."
