PARADISE, NEVADA: The atmosphere at Allegiant Stadium during Super Bowl LVIII turned solemn Sunday night, February 11, when San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw collapsed on the sideline in visible agony, clutching his left leg.

The defensive star's Achilles suddenly gave out, leaving Greenlaw unable to put weight on his leg. Trainers rushed to the aid of the 25-year-old, but it soon became clear that his night was over.

As Greenlaw was carted back to the locker room, helmet off and head down, the crushing reality set in for both the player and the team - the Niners would have to continue their title quest without one of their most vital defensive cogs, as per Daily Mail.

Departure of Dre Greenlaw is a painful case of deja vu for San Francisco 49ers

Greenlaw was bouncing up and down with teammates on the sidelines when he suddenly collapsed, grasping his left leg in agony. Trainers immediately rushed to his aid before carting him off the field, a heartbreaking sight for 49ers fans and players alike.

At halftime, the 49ers confirmed Greenlaw would not return, dealing a major blow to their defense. The starting linebacker began all 15 games he played this season and was second on the team in tackles. His absence left a gaping hole difficult to fill against the dynamic Kansas City Chiefs offense.

This is Greenlaw's fifth NFL season, having played his entire career thus far in San Francisco. He entered Sunday's game credited with three assists before the unfortunate injury occurred.

The departure of Greenlaw is a painful case of deja vu for the 49ers, reminiscent of their Super Bowl loss four years ago. Greenlaw is one of just eight current players who suited up in that 54th edition against Kansas City when the Chiefs overcame a 10-point deficit late to win.

Now their dreams of redemption have taken a hit with the loss of a trusted defender. Greenlaw's teammates and coaches know all too well how it feels to suffer critical injuries on football's biggest stage.
