Sarah Silverman tells Seth Meyers how Bradley Cooper called her out for saying they aren't good friends
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: On December 21's 'Late Night With Seth Meyers', Sarah Silverman discussed her equation with Bradley Cooper, her television special 'Sarah Silverman: Someone You Love' getting nominated for a Grammy and a Golden Globe, and winning an Emmy for her song about Matt Damon.
The discussion was part of the episode segment titled 'Bradley Cooper Called Sarah Silverman Out for Saying They Aren’t Good Friends'.
Silverman talks about 'theater of the mind'
The conversation kicked off with Colbert welcoming Silverman on the show, saying, "Welcome back. This is so nice of you to come out east. You're from your home in LA right before the holidays. Yeah, yeah. Oh, God, yeah. I just spent a week with my, um, common-law in-laws".
Silverman and Meyers discuss her relationship with her husband Rory Albanese and the concept of common-law in-laws. Despite being together for three years instead of the supposed 10 for common-law status, Silverman expressed love for Rory's parents, particularly his dad, Big Jim, who is a storyteller.
She shared a humorous anecdote about Big Jim narrating the entire 'Legends of the Fall' movie scene by scene.
Surrounding the dynamics of Silverman's relationship and the entertaining stories from her common-law in-laws, she mentioned, "It's the Theater of the mind, like the Mummy Christmas. Yeah, like, Fred's always talking about theater of the mind. -I like theater of the mind".
Colbert quipped, "Um, this is -- speaking of visual, this is a beautiful film that Bradley Cooper directed. Isn't it? It's gorgeous".
Sarah Silverman admits to knowing Bradley Cooper 'peripherally for a long time'
The conversation between the two moved on to Silverman's categorization of her equation with Bradley Cooper in an interview with a reporter. When asked about their relationship for the movie 'Maestro', Silverman didn't want to overstate their closeness, mentioning they knew each other peripherally.
Silverman said, "So, I did this interview with, like, a newspaper, uh, lady. You know, 'Hey, what's the scoop?' No.'
Colbert replied: "Yeah, we all know how newspaper ladies talk."
Silverman said, "Newspaper person."
Colbert: "Yeah".
Silverman: "Newspaper person."
Colbert replied, "That's what it's called."
Silverman responded, "Yeah. And, uh... she's asking me about 'Maestro', and she said, 'Did you -- How well do you know Bradley?' and I said, uh -- You know, I didn't want to be like, 'Oh, we're buddies.'"
She continued, "And I said, uh -- You know, I didn't want to be like, 'Oh, we're buddies'. I go, 'Uh, I know him. I've known him peripherally for a long time, you know? And we're not buddies. But, you know, we've known each other a bit here and there'".
However, in a funny twist of events, Bradley Cooper later confronted Silverman about her statement, claiming they are "totally good friends".
Silverman clarified the dynamic, admitting she doesn't have Bradley's email but has his phone number, suggesting it's a sign of a better friendship. The conversation revolved around the nuances of Hollywood friendships and humorous misinterpretations.
The conversation also touched on Silverman's special 'Someone You Love', which was nominated for a Grammy and a Golden Globe, and her past work, including the viral video "I'm [bleep] Matt Damon" and her appearance on 'Star Trek: Voyager'.
