WASHINGTON, DC: Scott Jennings sparked a fresh debate over media access and presidential transparency after praising Donald Trump during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner moments before the night took a dramatic turn.

Speaking at the high-profile event, Jennings argued that journalists today have more direct access to the president than ever before, even compared to past administrations led by Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and George W Bush.

Jennings’ remarks quickly stood out during an evening typically known for humor, light roasting, and political banter.

“Journalism has NEVER had more access to the leader of the free world than they have right now,” Jennings said. “Everybody in that room… has his cell phone number… he answers their calls.”

He doubled down on the claim, saying, “You couldn’t pry access like this out of Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, or George W Bush, or any other president.”

Instead of focusing only on jokes, he leaned into a serious point - that the relationship between the press and the president, while often tense, is more open than critics admit.

“We’ve never had a more accessible president to get those answers than we’ve had right now,” he said.

At the same time, Jennings acknowledged the constant back-and-forth between Trump and the media, suggesting that both sides play their part in the heated dynamic.

“He may roast the press and they spend 24 hours a day roasting him,” Jennings added. “They need to have a little bit of thick skin and put on their big boy pants and take it.”

High-profile evening turns chaotic within minutes

What was shaping up to be a typical Washington night soon took an unexpected turn.

Trump and First Lady Melania Trump had just made their entrance at the Washington Hilton, with Vice President JD Vance also in attendance, as guests settled in for speeches and the evening’s program.

Then, without warning, gunshots were heard inside the ballroom.

The mood instantly shifted. Guests ducked under tables as panic spread across the room. The event, known for its mix of politics and humor, came to a sudden halt.

Security personnel rushed in, moving quickly to take control of the situation.

According to reports, a gunman entered the hotel, bypassed a magnetometer, and opened fire. A Secret Service agent was hit in the vest but was reported to be safe.

Within minutes, agents secured the area and began evacuating Trump and other officials.

Trump confirms shooter apprehended and event postponed

In the immediate aftermath, there was confusion about what exactly had happened and the status of the suspect.

Trump later posted that the shooter had been “apprehended,” while also suggesting that he had initially been open to continuing the event.

The shooter has been apprehended, and I have recommended that we ‘Let the show go on’ but, will entirely be guided by Law Enforcement,” he wrote.

“Regardless of that decision, the evening will be much different than planned, and we’ll just, plain, have to do it again.”

Shortly after, he confirmed that authorities had advised an evacuation.

“Law Enforcement has requested that we leave the premises, consistent with protocol, which we will do, immediately,” Trump said.

He added that the White House Correspondents’ Dinner would be rescheduled.

“I have spoken with all the representatives in charge of the event, and we will be rescheduling within 30 days.”

Trump also reassured the public about the safety of those present.

“The First Lady, plus the Vice President, and all Cabinet members, are in perfect condition. We will be speaking to you in a half an hour,” he added.
