WASHINGTON, DC: Senator Joe Manchin is planning a challenge to Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic presidential nomination according to a July 21 report.

Manchin, a moderate Democrat from West Virginia who became an independent, is considering rejoining the Democratic Party to pursue a presidential bid, according to sources familiar with his thinking as reported by CNN.

Senator Joe Manchin urged Joe Biden to withdraw from 2024 race

The 76-year-old urged Joe Biden to withdraw from the race early, mere hours before Biden, aged 81, declared his exit.

“I’m hoping for that, because I think it will leave him with a tremendous legacy as one of the greatest leaders that we’ve had,” Manchin said on CNN’s 'State of the Union'.

He went on to say, “I say this, and I came to the decision with a heavy heart, that I think it’s time to pass the torch to a new generation.”

Before departing from the Democratic Party to become an independent in May, Manchin declared he would not run for reelection to his Senate seat, although he appeared to waver on this decision when questioned earlier in the summer.
