Senator Kevin Cramer's son Ian faces manslaughter charges in fatal car chase involving Sheriff's Deputy
HAZEN, NORTH DAKOTA, Ian Matthew Cramer, 42, son of Senator Kevin Cramer, finds himself back behind bars as he faces a manslaughter charge connected to a fatal car chase that claimed the life of Mercer County Sheriff’s Deputy Paul Martin, 53, in his home state of North Dakota.
The incident unfolded when authorities responded to reports of a stolen SUV late Wednesday, December 6, leading them to Ian and the stolen vehicle, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
What led to the tragic car crash?
The situation escalated when Ian allegedly sped off, prompting a pursuit. In the course of the chase, the 42 year old reportedly veered out of his lane and collided head-on with Deputy Martin's parked vehicle.
The 53-year-old Deputy, who was in the process of setting up a tire deflation device, tragically lost his life as a result of the collision, with his own patrol car being involved in a chain reaction from the impact.
Ian now faces a range of charges, including manslaughter, reckless endangerment, driving under suspension, fleeing a police officer, and preventing arrest, according to court records.
Ian Cramer's previous criminal record
The gravity of the situation is compounded by Ian's troubled history, including a 2013 misdemeanor assault charge for allegedly assaulting his brother. After entering a guilty plea, he was given a 10-day suspended prison sentence, a year’s probation, and ordered to pay a $150 fine.
That same year, Ian pleaded guilty for making a false report to law enforcement and possession of a controlled substance. He received credit for the time already served and was instructed to settle a $300 fine.
Senator Cramer conveys deep sorrow and reveals son's mental health issues
In a statement, Senator Cramer expressed deep sorrow, revealing that his son "suffers from serious mental disorders which manifest in severe paranoia and hallucinations."
“We grieve especially for the family of the hero who tried to help Ian, and we pray for our gracious God to show up as He always does in tragedy,” as per cramer.senate.gov.
The Senator extended condolences to Deputy Martin's family and colleagues, acknowledging the heroism of the fallen officer.
Cramer added, “We ask the public for prayers for the lost officer’s family and colleagues who serve us every day and are grateful for all they do for us. We also ask God for healing for Ian. We love him and hurt deeply.”
Martin, an 18-year veteran of the Mercer County Sheriff’s office, leaves behind a grieving family—his wife and three children. Ian is scheduled to make his initial court appearance on Friday at Mercer County Court.
