Shakira says she always thought having a husband was the 'most important thing' in life
Speaking to Marie Claire UK, Shakira explained her previous idea of love and marriage as she said, "Deep down, I always thought having a husband was the most important thing in my life."
"I was in search for that man like my dad, who I'd have kids with and then make plans to be with forever – like my parents, who are still so in love," she added.
The 47-year-old artist acknowledged the challenges of her journey but continues to draw strength from witnessing the steadfast love between her parents.
"I cannot say that I don’t believe in love because I see the example of my parents after 50 years together," said Shakira.
"I've witnessed love, I just haven't been that lucky myself," she added.
After over a decade of being together, the 'Whenever, Wherever' singer and the Pique separated in 2022.
Since her split from the soccer star, she has relocated to Florida and has been focusing on nurturing her relationship with her two sons, Milan and Sasha.
"I wondered how we were going to survive, how we were going to do it," she said of navigating the complexities of motherhood.
Shakira believes her friends will always stand by her side
Shakira shared that she finds comfort in the purest form of love and bonding in friendships as she said, "Oscar Wilde said that friendship is the purest form of love and I think that's true."
"My relationship [lasted] 12 years but my friends will be there a lifetime," she added.

Shakira explains the meaning behind her latest album 'Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran'
In March, Shakira released her new album 'Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran' which translates to "women no longer cry."
Explaining the meaning behind the album's title, she said, "For too long we've been sent to cry with script in our hands and without an end just because we're women."
"We have to conceal our pain in front of our kids, in front of society," Shakira shared during her appearance on 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon'.
"We have to heal in a certain way. And I don't think anyone is supposed to tell us how to heal. No one is supposed to tell a she wolf how to lick her wounds, you know?" she continued.

"I think that now women decide when to cry, how to cry, and until when. Nobody's supposed to tell us how to cope with the hardship of life," the singer added.
