Carson Daly raises awareness about cardiovascular diseases while addressing his mother's death

Taking to Instagram, Daly shared a photo of New York's Empire State Building illuminated with red lights.

In the accompanying caption, he disclosed that the iconic building was bathed in red lights in support of the American Heart Association's Wear Red Campaign, which aims to raise awareness of heart disease, especially among women.

Taking a more personal turn, Daly delved into his mother's medical history and reflected on the circumstances that led to her death in 2017.

He wrote, "[Pattie] was a type 1 diabetic & was generally VERY healthy for 73. (Including kicking breast cancer’s a** decades prior) She died unexpectedly (on Emmy night in CA, I had just visited her & the fam hours prior)."

The TV host continued, "My dad was battling a terrible end stage cancer diagnosis & mom was a shell of herself caring for him. That stress definitely didn’t help. [Pattie] died of a massive heart attack after helping my dad to the bathroom late that night."

He further shared, "Here’s what I regret, I took great interest in my mom’s health esp as she got older. (I even traveled with a full blood sugar monitor kit, glucose gels, OJ, candy, etc…just in case..) She went to the doctor regularly and was 'on it.' We made sure of it."

"What NO ONE told us was that the leading cause of death for type 1 diabetics (esp after 70) is CVD (cardiovascular disease) it accounts for 2/3 of deaths," mentioned Daly.

He stressed, "I NEVER knew the 2 were even related! If I had, I would have had my mom’s heart scanned OFTEN. Stress tests, coronary imaging, angiograms, echograms hell, I would have sent her a singing telegram!”

"All of it! But I did NOT KNOW. I feel like I could have saved her life had I known the correlation," said the 'Today' host.

Daly urged anyone dealing with similar situations to proactively seek information, advising them to "ask a few questions or explore any medical advice that might offer assistance before it's too late."

The former MTV VJ mentioned, "So if you know anyone in a similar situation maybe ask a few questions or look into any medical advice that might help before it’s too late. I’m not trying to re-memorialize my mom here, but she would want me to speak up & share my experience on the chance it helps even 1 person or another son out there. I hope it does."

"Wow! I guess it’s a good thing I didn’t get a chance to 'share' this on tv today- I’d have talked for 30 mins! lol ..’aaaaaaand we’re in commercial break!’," concluded the 'Today' host.
