He took to Instagram on Wednesday, March 27, to share the heartbreaking news about Monroe's acute myelogenous leukemia (AML Leukemia), a cancer of the blood and bone marrow.

Gunnar began his post by warning his followers that it would be a departure from his usual content, featuring photos of his family, with Monroe in the hospital.

"This is going to be longer, and cathartically different from my usual fare. Forewarned is forewarned. Life changing turn," he began.

He described Monroe as their “perfect 4-year-old daughter” and shared that she had been experiencing "typical kid stuff" symptoms such as a nagging cough, intermittent fever, and an odd pallor for a few days last week.

When his wife, Jess Peterson, noticed bruises on Monroe’s legs, she took their daughter to the hospital.

Four days later, Monroe's white blood cell, platelet, hemoglobin, and hematocrit counts dropped, necessitating a series of treatments.

Gunnar wrote that Monroe needed "immediate transfusions," and a bone marrow biopsy, flow cytometry, spinal taps, chemotherapy, and was even a Make-A-Wish Foundation candidate.

He then revealed, “She has AML leukemia,” he wrote, expressing disbelief at the situation.

“How the f*#! did we get here?!?!” Despite the shock and fear, Gunnar affirmed his belief in his daughter’s strength, writing, “Our Warrior Princess will crush this! She has even said it herself!”
