Shelley Duvall claims ‘violence’ forced her to quit Hollywood as she became 'kind of delusional'
TEXAS HILL COUNTY, TEXAS: Shelley Duvall has given a rare interview after being away from the entertainment world for years.
‘The Shining’ actress will soon be seen in a movie called ‘The Forest Hills', which will be her first in over two decades, Daily Mail reported.
Duvall spoke with The New York Times recently where she disclosed her reason behind being out of the limelight.
She said, “I was a star; I had leading roles,” but then went on to allege that “it’s violence” that made her quit.
Shelley Duvall claims to get ‘hurt’ in Hollywood
The 74-year-old also noted, “People think it’s just aging, but it’s not. It’s violence.”
But Duvall did not elaborate much on it as she added, “How would you feel if people were really nice, and then, suddenly, on a dime they turn on you? You would never believe it unless it happens to you. That’s why you get hurt, because you can’t really believe it’s true.”
Dan Gilroy says people love ‘downfall stories’
The actress’s longtime partner and musician Dan Gilroy also reportedly agreed with her as he said, “Everyone’s always interested in downfall stories.”
“It’s all over the internet: ‘Look at her now’ and ‘You won’t believe what she looks like now.’ Every celebrity gets that treatment,” the 76-year-old asserted.
Gilroy even went on to note that their shift to Texas after the destruction of her Los Angeles home due to the Northridge earthquake in 1994 led to more downfall.
He reportedly revealed that she "started becoming afraid of things, maybe didn't want to work."
"It's really hard to pin it on any one thing," the writer stated as he continued that Duvall turned "kind of delusional."
"It went south like that," he disclosed but also mentioned he did not feel much tension about her when she sleeps in her car, which she prefers.
Shelley Duvall spoke about pay disparity
This came after in 2023, Duvall told PEOPLE that payment was not good for women in the industry.
She revealed, “You didn't get paid much—just scale plus 10 percent. They thought women would just marry and the husband's going to support them. But that doesn't happen for everybody.”
Also, the ‘Popeye’ actress shared at the time that she took a break from work in the '90s due to her brother’s spinal cancer.
“It's the longest sabbatical I ever took but it was for really important reasons—to get in touch with my family again,” she noted.
Duvall then mentioned, “[Jessica Tandy] won an Oscar when she was 80. I can still win,” before adding, “Let's go to Dairy Queen and get ourselves some decadent desserts.”
