NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Gymnastics icon Simone Biles publicly condemned former NCAA swimmer-turned-activist Riley Gaines on Friday, June 6, for what she described as a harmful and targeted attack on a transgender high school athlete.

The dispute erupted on X (formerly Twitter) after Gaines mocked Minnesota’s state softball championship team for including a trans player, reports The Guardian.

Riley Gaines had reposted a Minnesota State High School League post congratulating Champlin Park High School for winning the 2025 Class AAAA title, adding a caustic caption, “Comments off lol. To be expected when your star player is a boy.”

Her words drew immediate backlash, including from Biles, who called the post “truly sick” and slammed Gaines as a “sore loser.”

“You’re truly sick, all of this campaigning because you lost a race. Straight up sore loser,” Biles wrote in response.

“You should be uplifting the trans community and perhaps finding a way to make sports inclusive OR creating a new avenue where trans feel safe in sports. Maybe a transgender category IN ALL sports!! But instead… You bully them… One things for sure is no one in sports is safe with you around!!!!!”

Biles’ comments referenced Gaines’ long-standing opposition to transgender inclusion in women’s sports, particularly after Gaines tied for fifth place with Lia Thomas, a trans swimmer, in the 2022 NCAA 200-yard freestyle championship. While Thomas received the trophy, Gaines has since used her platform to advocate for what she calls “protecting women’s sports.”

In her rebuttal to Simone Biles, Riley Gaines doubled down, “This is actually so disappointing. It's not my job or the job of any woman to figure out how to include men in our spaces. You can uplift men stealing championships in women's sports with YOUR platform. Men don't belong in women's sports and I say that with my full chest.”

Biles added another comment that said, “Bully someone your own size, which would ironically be a male.”

In a series of follow-up posts, Gaines reacted to Biles' comments with frustration, calling the seven-time gold medalist's views on transgender athletes “disappointing” and accusing her of being a “male apologist at the expense of young girls’ dreams.”

She concluded, “Didn’t have that on my bingo card. Maybe she could compete in pommel horse and rings in 2028.”
