Sophie Ellis-Bextor roasted for not keeping ‘up with her own songs’ during New Year’s Eve show

LONDON, ENGLAND: Sophie Ellis-Bextor belted out a melodious performance for BBC One’s New Year’s Eve special event, but it failed to resonate with a section of fans who panned the songstress and called her act a “breathless mess”. 

The 45-year-old British singer performed a medley of her hits, during the pre-recorded show which was shown on New Year’s Eve. 

Apart from her solos, Ellis-Bextor also performed duets with stars including Jessie Ware, Scissor Sisters' Jake Shears and The Last Dinner Party.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s New Year’s Eve disco was confirmed in November

Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s performance for BBC One was recorded in early December, and on New Year’s Eve, she performed live in New York. 

However, back in November, it was announced that the songstress would appear for the BBC's New Year's Eve Spectacular.

After confirming her performance on BBC Radio 2, Ellis-Bextor gushed, “I always love a party, and I immediately think of sparkles, singing and dancing for a New Year’s Eve celebration,” as reported by Daily Mail.

She continued, “And that’s what I’ll be bringing with me for my BBC One performance this New Year! The band and I can’t wait, and we have some special surprises planned.”

“I’m so honored to have been asked to bid a fond farewell to 2024 with you all, and to welcome in an exciting 2025 together,” shared the singer, before adding, “Get your disco shoes ready! I’ll be wearing mine…”

Sophie Ellis-Bextor New Year's Eve show gets panned by viewers

As the singer's performance was broadcast on BBC One, the viewers on the internet took to social media to voice their frustration over the performance. 

One of the netizens said, "So the best @BBC can give us Sophie Ellis Bextor singing out of key in her thin reedy voice. God it’s bad!"

"What on earth is happening with @BBCOne #NewYear show. Poor Sophie-Ellis Bextor can’t even keep up with her own songs, a breathless mess. Just lip-sync and then you can at least nail the stage presence.. this is cringe! 🙈," said someone else. 

Another user noted, "Can’t bear her. Had to switch over. That anodyne, whiney tone - whoever said she could sing?"

"Pretty lady but she was out of tune she couldn’t keep up with the songs just a real mess," added another user. 

Meanwhile, another fan noted that the second half of the show was good, saying, "Tbh the first half was pretty boring and underwhelming but after murder on the dancefloor she got her act together."

"The @BBCOne #NewYearsEve2024 show is awful. Sorry but Sophie Ellis-Bextor is sounding really bad tonight. Time to find something else," declared another user. 

"This Sophie Ellis bextor performance on the BBC wouldn’t be out of place in the local on karaoke Thursdays. Absolute pony," said another disgruntled user.

Another user chimed in, "I think she’s pulled it around, those first new songs were not so great."

"Pity it was filmed at the start of December as she was live in New York tonight," shared someone else, moaning about her BBC show not being live.

Another fan, however, praised her performance, "I think she's put on an amazing performance."
