LOCKPORT, ILLINOIS: Cassandra Cales, sister of Stacy Peterson, who vanished in 2007, claimed she discovered her sibling's remains from an Illinois canal.
The then 23-year-old Stacy Peterson was married to former Bolingbrook Police Sgt Drew Peterson at the time of her disappearance. While he was found guilty of killing Kathleen Savio, his estranged third wife, in 2012, Stacy has never been located.
Cassandra Cales is working to retrieve the remains
Cassandra, Stacy's sister, shared underwater video of the purported skeletal remains with NewsNation, claiming to have found her body in a canal in Lockport, 35 miles outside of Chicago.
She notified the police about the supposed remains in 2020. However, authorities weren't fruitful in their search.
She noted, "They were floating on top of the water the whole time. And when I was there they didn't even talk to me and treated me like a criminal, and at the end they told me the area is cleared."
Cassandra declared, "It's somebody," and mentioned that she is gathering money to retrieve the remains, "Whether it’s my sister or not, they need to be brought home."
She is currently working with her team to retreive the apparent remains.
Drew Peterson claimed he doesn't know what happened to Stacy Peterson
When questioned about Stacy's disappearence, Drew claimed he doesn't know what happened to her and that she most likely vanished on her own, as per Daily Mail.
He remarked, "Her mother did the same thing and disappeared like that. Stacy always loved and admired her mother. So, if Stacy did what her mother did. I could believe that all day long."
Christie Marie Cales, the mother of Stacy, vanished from sight in the Chicago suburb of Blue Island in 1998 after she was last spotted walking down a street at 4.30 pm.
Authorities were informed by her boyfriend that Christie had vanished and was never seen again, but Stacy's surviving siblings maintain that she was murdered.
While speaking to Ashleigh Banfield about Savio, Drew characterized her as "boisterous and combative."
He stated, "Kathy, my third wife, she’d fight at the snap of a finger, she’d just want to argue all the time. She was a very, what's the word? Well, she was very Italian. She was very boisterous, very combative. It had to be her way or no way. And I didn't really put up with that."
Drew Peterson apparently killed Kathleen Savio in fear of bankruptcy
Drew claimed he didn't want his "children to think he killed their mothers" in response to a question about why he won't admit his crimes.
When Stacy was just a teenager, the couple started dating, which Savio learned about in 2001 after getting an anonymous letter in the mail.
Sue Doman, Savio's sister, told Dateline, "She called me and said, 'I got a letter, and it said–he was having an affair, and she was a laughingstock.'"
Doman added, "The thing that really stood out with Kathleen was that [Stacy] was a baby. I don't understand why he would do this," the woman uttered. After the revelation, Savio wanted a divorce and wanted half of Drew's pension and half of the house investment.
He apparently killed Savio in fear of bankruptcy due to their impending divorce settlement.
In 2013, Drew was handed a 38-year prison sentence for the 2004 murder of his third wife, Savio.
The couple had been divorced when her body was discovered in a bathtub. Although her death was first declared an accident, the police reopened the investigation when Stacy vanished.
Savio's body was exhumed and reclassified as a homicide. Peterson, who was arrested in 2009, is due for parole in 2047.
In 2016, Drew was also found guilty of hatching a plan to kill the Will County prosecutor who put him behind bars, leading to an additional 40 years in prison.
Internet reacts as sister of Stacy Peterson claims to have found her remains
As soon as the news of Cassandra finding Stacy's remains surfaced on the internet, netizen started sharing their thoughts.
One questioned, "How did she find the remains? I’m confused, was she digging in the canal, did she hire someone to search?"
Another said, "Law enforcement’s response has been disgraceful. There’s definitely remains down there and they need to retrieve them. Then determine whose they are. The response to Stacy’s disappearance has always been strange. This family needs closure. Shame on the FBI and local police."
A person expressed, "If it is Stacy, it will bring closure regardless of what happens to Drew Peterson. If it isn't Stacy, it could bring closure to another family(Lisa Stebic?)," highlighting the case of Lisa Michelle Stebic, a 37-year-old mother who went missing from her Plainfield, Illinois home in April 2007.

If it isn't Stacy, it could bring closure to another family(Lisa Stebic?).
