HARRIS COUNTY, TEXAS: A homeowner in Harris County, Texas, fatally shot a man early on Sunday, February 18, morning after he allegedly stole a barbeque pit from the house.

On Sunday, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said on social media that officers were called to the 15000 Block of Ralston Road near Kentington Oak Drive in response to reports that a man had been shot and was later declared deceased.

Shooting victim allegedly stole a BBQ pit

Gonzalez shared on X, "@HCSOTexas units responded to the 15000 blk of Ralston Rd/Kentington Oak, in reference to a male who was shot and confirmed deceased."

"Preliminary: the deceased male had allegedly stolen or attempted to steal the shooter’s bbq pit from his residence. The male fled in 1/3"

According to an initial inquiry, the deceased man purportedly tried to take the gunman's barbecue pit from his house, Fox News reports.

Gonzalez further updated, "Update: investigators determined the deceased male had stolen a bbq pit from the shooter’s residence. The homeowner exited his residence and gave chase in his own vehicle. The homeowner caught up and confronted the male who was stealing the bbq pit a 1/4."

Gonzalez claimed that the homeowner left his house after realizing that his grill had been taken and drove his own car to pursue the burglar.

Case to be heard by grand jury

A short distance away, the homeowner pursued the man who was running away with the BBQ pit and confronted two people inside a car.

The man informed the police that he thought the driver of the suspected car might be carrying a weapon. Gonzalez claimed that the homeowner shot the suspect with his own gun out of fear for his own safety.

According to the sheriff, the other occupant of the car was unharmed and is not facing any charges.

The homeowner was taken into custody, and the sheriff stated that he gave a thorough statement about the incident and assisted investigators. Upon completion of the investigation, the case will be turned over to the Harris County District Attorney's Office for a grand jury hearing.
