AUSTIN, TEXAS: Texas Governor Greg Abbott lashed out at former President Donald Trump's hush money criminal trial, dubbing it a "kangaroo court," reported Newsweek.

The Republican governor expressed his frustration through an X (formerly Twitter) post on Saturday, May 11, suggesting the voters should decide for Trump instead of the "leftist ideologue judge." He also accused Judge Juan Merchan, who is overseeing the trial, of being "partisan."

Unlike President Joe Biden, Trump could not actively campaign for the past month as he was required to be present in the Manhattan courtroom.

"Free this man from the Kangaroo Court & allow him to return full-time to the campaign trail," wrote Abbott, who is considered for Trump's running mate position, in his X post.

He added, "Let voters decide, not a leftist ideologue judge doling out partisan decisions. He will secure the border, slash inflation, end wars, restore peace on campuses & lock up criminals."

Besides the hush money case, Trump faces three other indictments for mishandling classified documents, attempting to overturn the 2020 election results, and instigating the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack.

The former president has frequently argued that the criminal cases were politically motivated and aimed to prevent him from actively campaigning for his presidential bid.

At a New Jersey campaign rally on Saturday, Trump claimed the ongoing hush money trial was a "Biden show trial." Labeling the incumbent a "total moron," the real estate mogul blamed his successor for his legal woes.

"You don't do that to your opponents. It's done in third-world countries, in banana republics, not in the United States of America," stated the presumptive GOP nominee to the 80,000-plus crowd.

In the hush money case, the MAGA spearhead faces 34 counts for falsifying business records to cover up a payment made to Stormy Daniels through his former attorney Michael Cohen before the 2016 election to silence her about their alleged affair.

Key witnesses, including Daniels, former National Enquirer publisher David pecker, Trump's ex-aides Rhona Graff and Hope Hicks, testified before the 12-panel jury in the past weeks. Cohen is expected to take the stand against him on Monday.

Internet reacts to Greg Abbott's remarks on Donald Trump's hush money trial

Netizens seemed to disagree with Abbott's suggestion that voters should get to decide Trump's fate.

One wrote, "That's a jury's job," and another said, "No, I would rather let a jury decide if he is guilty of crimes or not. Just because he is a politician running for office doesn’t make him above the law. You might want to remember that."

"He broke the law. He must stand trial. Simple to understand. I thought Texas was all about Law and Order?" remarked a person. Someone else stated, "Let all criminals out of the courts and let voters decide if they are guilty or not. Sounds like a great system."

"The party of law and order doesn't like law and order when it pertains to them. We get it Greggy," expressed an individual.

Another person said, "...this is coming from a guy who used to be a Texas State Supreme Court Justice... So much for supporting the Rule of Law. So much for respecting Due Process. I guess the Court of Public Opinion matters more to this guy. A Governor," and one more chimed in, "Voters decided in 2020.. Trump didn't care."
