'The courage to do this': Internet lauds Jay-Z as he slams Grammys for Beyonce’s Album of the Year snub
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: In a bold acceptance speech on Sunday night, February 4, rapper and business mogul Jay-Z criticized the Grammy Awards for failing to recognize his wife Beyonce's artistry over her decades-long career, as per The Daily Beast.
Accepting the Recording Academy's Dr Dre Global Impact Award, Jay-Z thanked the organization but also challenged its voting members to "get it right" when assessing Black artists. He specifically highlighted Beyonce's consistent snubs in the Album of the Year category, despite her record-breaking 32 Grammy wins.
"I'm just saying, we want you all to get it right," Jay-Z remarked. "We love y'all, we love y'all. We want you to get it right — or at least get it close to right."

Beyonce never won Album of the Year despite having 32 Grammy trophies
Turning to face his visibly surprised wife by his side on stage, Jay-Z continued: "I don't want to embarrass this young lady, but she has more Grammys than everyone and never won Album of the Year. So even by your own metrics, that doesn't work. Think about that. The most Grammys; never won Album of the Year. That doesn't work."
Indeed, the facts support Jay-Z's critique. With 32 trophies, Beyonce holds the record for most Grammy wins by a female artist and most Grammy wins by a singer. Yet, she has never claimed the ceremony's top prize for Album of the Year.
Other Black artists, including Kendrick Lamar, have been similarly shut out from the major Grammy categories over the years. Jay-Z seemed to be alluding to a larger pattern of alleged racial bias within the Recording Academy's voting body.
"When I get nervous, I tell the truth," he quipped at the end of his remarks, drawing chuckles from the star-studded audience. But his message was clearly serious.
While Beyonce is not up for any awards at this year's Grammys, she was nominated for nine awards last year, including the top prizes of Album, Record, and Song of the Year. At the 2023 ceremony, she took home three Grammys out of those nine nominations.
