‘The Emperor is holding gladiator games,’ Bill Maher ridicules Trump’s UFC birthday plans
WASHINGTON, DC: After a short-lived truce between Trump and the HBO host and conservative commentator, Bill Maher, has once again resorted to mocking President Donald Trump.
The latest subject of his commentary against Trump was the highly anticipated UFC fight at the White House on the occasion of Trump’s 80th birthday celebration.
A UFC fight card is scheduled to take place on the White House South Lawn on June 14, an event tied to President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday and the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations.
Maher taunts Trump’s 'emperor' behavior
Appearing on Friday night’s edition of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, Bill Maher called Trump a ‘red neck president’ who acted like an ‘emperor’ by holding gladiator games on his birthday.
The interview guest at the show was David Sedaris, former contributor to The New Yorker, humorist, and author.
Besides Sedaris, the panel guests were Ian Bremmer, president and founder of Eurasia Group and GZERO Media, and Hagar Chemali, former spokesperson of the US Mission to the United Nations (UN), co-founder of the Lebanon-Israel Peace Alliance, and host of the YouTube show “Oh My World.”
Maher devoted a part of the monologue to roasting Trump over the Knicks loss and tomorrow’s UFC fight.
After talking about the recent Knicks game in New York, Maher drew a comparison between the game and a UFC fight, saying one of the big sporting events is going to be held at the White House.
“The really big sporting event is this weekend, you know, I’m sure you know what’s going on, our redneck president is turning 80, and to celebrate there is a UFC fight on the lawn.”
Maher went on to compare the White House UFC event to the gladiator games staged by Roman emperors. “So the emperor is holding gladiator games on his birthday."
Maher tells Trump to skip Knicks Game 5
Bill Maher joked that President Donald Trump should stay away from Game 5 of the New York Knicks' playoff series, citing the team's loss after Trump attended Game 3.
Maher began by praising the Knicks before quipping that the week's “greatest come-from-behind team” was actually Iran’s negotiators.
He then turned his attention to the Knicks' playoff run, noting that the team had been on a 13-game postseason winning streak before Trump attended a game.
“I’m not saying he made them lose,” Maher said. “I am saying I am offering a million dollars not to go to this game.”
He quickly clarified that the remark was a joke, adding that he did not want to face another lawsuit over comments involving money offers.
The comedian appeared to be referencing previous legal threats and controversies tied to his public remarks, stressing that the statement was made in jest and was not intended as a serious offer.
