FORT WORTH, TEXAS: Shelley Duvall, beloved for her role as Wendy Torrance in the 1980 horror classic 'The Shining', died at the age of 75. Her death due to complications from diabetes marks the end of her long and difficult journey, the Daily Mail reported.

Duvall retreated from the Hollywood spotlight in 2002, choosing a quiet life in Texas. Despite a brief return to the screen in 2023's 'The Forest Hills', she largely stayed off the grid, often sleeping in her car and reminiscing over photos from her film career.

In her last interview in April, Duvall spoke candidly about her departure from the film industry, revealing the emotional scars left by her Hollywood experiences.

"I was a star, I had leading roles. People think it's just aging, but it's not. It's violence," she told The New York Times, though she did not elaborate on the specifics of the violence she endured.

Duvall's later years were marked by increased health issues. She spent her days enjoying music and the Texas heat, celebrating her 74th birthday with iced coffees, sugar cookies, and kolaches, according to a fan club member.

Despite these small joys, her life was far from glamorous. Duvall often slept in her white SUV, surrounded by used takeout containers and keepsakes from her acting days.

Her partner, Dan Gilroy, who had been with her since 1989, shared insights into her mental health battles. He described her paranoia and delusions, which escalated after their move to Texas following the destruction of their Los Angeles home in the 1994 Northridge earthquake.

"It went south like that," Gilroy said, noting that Duvall's fearfulness and reluctance to work worsened over time.

In what is believed to be the final photo of Duvall, she appears frail but appreciative, leaning on a fan's shoulder and holding a bouquet of flowers. This picture was taken just days before her death, on her 75th birthday.

The fan, who runs a Shelley Duvall fan account, expressed gratitude for the moments they shared, saying, "She made such a positive impact on my life as I did on hers."

Duvall's love for the arts never waned, even in her final days. Her brief return to acting in 'The Forest Hills' demonstrated her enduring passion for her craft.

Reflecting on her career, she once mused about the possibility of winning an Oscar, inspired by Jessica Tandy's late-life win. While she may not have received that accolade, Duvall's impact on film and her indelible performances will be remembered for generations to come.

In a February 2023 interview, Duvall opened up about the family heartache that led her to step away from Hollywood in 2002. She explained to People that she decided to move back to Fort Worth, Texas after her brother was diagnosed with spinal cancer and her movie roles began to dwindle.

"It's the longest sabbatical I ever took, but it was for really important reasons—to get in touch with my family again," she said.

Reflecting on her career, Duvall noted, "On one channel there is Popeye and another one The Shining. Boy, those are two different films. But in a way it's like, 'Gosh, I was great.'"

Duvall also shared her aspirations for acting's highest honor, saying, "(Jessica Tandy) won an Oscar when she was 80. I can still win."

The death of Shelley Duvall, known for her unforgettable performance in 'The Shining', has prompted a wave of heartfelt tributes on social media. Duvall, who died at 75 from complications related to diabetes, left a lasting impact on her fans and the entertainment industry.

One admirer wrote, "Rest in peace, Shelley. You brought a lot of joy to audiences with your work, and I'm so happy you had a last chance to do what you did best, work and create."

Another echoed this sentiment, saying, "A brilliant actress. So sorry to read about her declining health and many problems."

Duvall's departure from Hollywood in 2002 has also led some to question the industry’s treatment of its stars. One user asked, "I wonder what Hollywood did to her? I can imagine. It’s a cesspit of directors, producers, and actors who treat women and kids like playthings. Poor soul. May she be at peace, and all the other people whom Hollywood has chewed up and spat out."

One person remarked, "She will never be forgotten... And that's quite something."

One individual reflected on her struggles, writing, "It’s really sad that she suffered so much, physically and mentally. RIP Shelley. You’ve earned it."
