NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Time Magazine named Taylor Swift as the Person of the Year for 2023 on December 5. While discussing the coronation of the pop icon on 'The View,' co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Sunny Hostin had differing opinions, surprising everyone.

On the show, Goldberg revealed the news, stating that although the chosen person typically sparks a debate each year, Swift happens to be a "really good choice, given everything she has been doing."

Goldberg emphasized Swift's qualities as a talented musician and her efforts to encourage young people to vote, noting that "she is not laying around."

In support of her co-host, Joy Behar shared some impressive figures, noting that a single social media post from the Grammy winner led to 35,000 people registering on voter.org.

"The Wall Street Journal reports that the entire US leg of her Eras Tour could have a $5.7 billion boost to the nation's economy. That's power. That is power," she claimed.

Sara Haines jumped in on the discussion, saying, "$55 million of her own money as bonuses to truck drivers, people that worked on the tour, sound techs, all these people… We never saw a red wave but we saw a lavender haze because this is the year of Taylor, if not the decade."

Sunny Hostin's alternative take on the 'Person of The Year' selection

Sunny Hostin expressed her alignment with all the points made in favor of Swift, acknowledging her as an "incredible performer, humanist, and philanthropist."

She also humorously noted that the title was originally "Man of the Year" when it was first introduced in 1927, which she found to be "ridiculous."

Nevertheless, Hostin also took into account other contenders for the recognition, including the "Hollywood Strikers" and "the Trump prosecutors," suggesting that, in her opinion, they "may be able to save our democracy."

Goldberg interrupted Hostin, interjecting, "You're a prosecutor. We ain't buying it," with others chiming in that the prosecutors have yet to secure a conviction.

Hostin remained steadfast in her stance, stating that, in her opinion, there were a couple of other individuals who better embodied Time's motto of "the person or persons who most affected the news and our lives."

When confronted by her co-hosts once more, Hostin clarified that she was not diminishing Swift's achievements but simply believed that there could have been better choices.

Goldberg remained unconvinced, asserting, "Taylor's gravitas is different." According to her, the magazine honors the person who has had the most impact, and the impact of Swift, she claimed, "has been startling."

Whoopi Goldberg calls Elon Musk a 'bonehead'

In an effort to clarify her position, Hostin pointed out that in 2022, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky received the honor, and the year before that it was Elon Musk, adding a grimace to express her sentiment.

At that juncture, Goldberg remarked, "I'm sorry, he would not have been my man of the year. But he was the man of the year because he was a bonehead."

Hostin added, "So (the impact) could be for good or ill," to which Goldberg responded, "Well, (Swift) is for good, and that's why she got her (title)."
