NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Tom Hanks' impromptu participation at the 'Saturday Night Live' 50th anniversary special provoked social media criticism from Republicans, but several vocal Democrats, like 'The View' co-host Joy Behar have sympathized with the indignation.

'The View' host claimed on Tuesday, February 18 episode that Hanks' sketch turned "anyone who voted for Trump look like a racist" and that she "would never do that, because I don't believe that any group is one thing," per Daily Mail.

Joy Behar explains why Tom Hanks' MAGA 'SNL' character making supporters 'mad'

According to 'The View' co-host, stand-up comedian, and ardent Donald Trump critic, Joy Behar, the reintroduction of Tom Hanks' 'Black Jeopardy' character, who wears a MAGA hat, on 'SNL's recent 50th anniversary special has angered conservatives.

Hanks played Doug again in the contentious comedy, a character from a 2016 sketch who dons a MAGA hat and does remarkably well on a parody game show called 'Black Jeopardy'.

In the updated version of the sketch, Doug fiercely declined to shake hands with Kenan Thompson's character, host Darnell Hayes. Trump supporters instantly condemned the sketch show, accusing Hanks and 'SNL' of unfairly portraying them.

Link Lauren, a former aide to Robert F Kennedy Jr, described the character as "disgusting" and charged that 'Saturday Night Live' was promoting a stale, divisive storyline. Likewise, former 'SNL' star Victoria Jackson called it "stupid."

Behar appeared to concur that Hanks' depiction of MAGA enthusiasts in the 'SNL' spoof should enrage Trump supporters. "The fact remains that they're making anyone who voted for Trump look like a racist, and that's why they're mad," she said.

The comedian implied that she believed Trump's supporters had good reason to be "insulted" and that it is unacceptable to label a whole group of people as "one thing."

Meanwhile, co-host Sunny Hostin described Hanks' skit as "a very subversive sketch, in fact; it's about Black culture being American culture."

Alyssa Farah Griffin, a former staffer in the Trump administration, also believed "the outrage over it is a little overblown."

Joy Behar claimed MAGA Republicans were 'misled' by President Donald Trump

Joy Behar, 82, went on to say that several MAGA Republicans were "misled" by Donald Trump and voted for him because they thought he would address the cost of living crisis and inflation.

According to Behar, Trump's victory in the 2024 election was not only due to racism. "It's not only racism that caused Trump to be in office. We have to remember that. So of course they're going to be insulted," she said.

"A lot of these people [who voted for Trump], in my opinion, have been misled. They thought that grocery prices would come down. They're up. They thought inflation was coming down. It's up," Behar stressed.

"They thought that Medicaid was safe. It's not. They thought Social Security was safe. It's not," she added.

Behar further compared Republicans' annoyance with the feelings of 'The View' hosts when political analyst Bill O'Reilly said, "Muslims killed us on 9/11," during his 2010 appearance on the talk show.

Joy Behar slammed for supporting criticism of Tom Hanks' MAGA 'SNL' parody

Online users took to X (formerly Twitter) to condemn Joy Behar's support of the backlash towards Tom Hanks' 'Black Jeopardy' parody as one said, "She was weird about the whole discussion."

Another user said, "Way to keep your eye on the ball, Joy. if only virtue signaling could save our republic."

Someone else stated, "When you have Joy saying you went too far, you know you have truly jumped the shark."

"So funny because Conservatives believe lefties like Behar are very racist. The epitome of this is when Kathy Hochul said black people didn’t know what the word computer is…" added a user.

Another added, "Yes, because, of course, anyone who voted for Trump is a racist."

"Is that an admission from Joy Behar? Did she vote for Trump?" asked another individual.

"End your worship and adulation of idiot celebrities. Look not to the bottom of society, but aim higher," seethed one user.

Another said, "Probably because anybody who voted for his is in fact a racist. If you feel like you're being called out, it's because you are."
