DENVER, COLORADO: Denver Nuggets star Coban Porter, the younger brother of Michael Porter, has been sentenced in a case involving a fatal DUI crash.

On Friday, April 19, Judge Ericka Englert of Denver District Court sentenced Coban Porter to six years in prison for vehicular homicide, resulting in the death of Katharina Rothman, 42, according to the Denver Post.

He also received a two-year sentence for vehicular assault for injuring her passenger. The basketball star will serve both sentences simultaneously after pleading guilty to both charges last year.

According to the police, Michael was driving under the influence near the University of Denver on January 22, 2023. This occurred while he was playing for the Pioneers men's basketball team.

Court documents indicate that the convict was speeding and ran a red light. He subsequently collided with Rothman's vehicle, who was driving for Uber at the time.

Rothman tragically lost her life at the scene, while her passenger, a 47-year-old man, sustained severe injuries in the accident.

It was later revealed that Porter's blood alcohol level was .19, which is more than twice the legal limit of .08, according to the prosecutor.

Porter addressed the court on Friday, expressing, "All I can really say is that I’m sorry. I know that I’m never going to be able to right that wrong. ... I never thought I’d be standing here. I thought I was invincible.”

"I'm so sorry," he said to the courtroom, according to the outlet, admitting, "It wasn’t the first time I chose to drink and drive."

“I chose to drive there, I chose to drink and I chose to try to drive home. I didn’t mean to hurt her. I hope you know that. I know that doesn’t change anything,” he added.

His elder brother, Michael, was also present to testify for his brother’s character, reports Denver Post.

“I truly don’t think I’d be in the position I am today as a professional basketball player without a brother like Coban pushing me every day,” he said.

“He would get up earlier than me, work out harder than me. I know it’s not often that a big brother looks up to a younger brother, but that is how it was for me.”
