Times Square to host historic second ball drop in July to honor America’s 250th birthday
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Times Square will host a second ceremonial ball drop in 2026, marking a rare departure from a tradition that has defined New Year’s Eve celebrations for more than a century.
Organizers announced on Friday, December 26, that the additional ball drop will take place on July 3, 2026, as part of events commemorating the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.
The summer event will be held under the 'America250' initiative, a congressionally mandated, nonpartisan effort to coordinate national observances tied to the semiquincentennial.
July 4 spectacle inspired by New Year’s Eve traditions
Rosie Rios, chair of 'America250', said that the July 4 event is expected to expand on the familiar New Year’s Eve format.
"Whatever you’re imagining as a broadcast performance, it’s much more than that," Rios told The New York Post. "It's going to be huge, and it’s going to be beyond anyone’s expectations."
She said that the goal is to adapt elements of the annual New Year’s Eve celebration to mark the nation’s upcoming milestone.
"To ring in the 4th of July, starting with the same type of festivities that you would normally see on New Year’s Eve," Rios said. "What better way to represent this global impact that we as a country have?"
January 1 preview to kick off festivities
Organizers claimed that a preview of the 'America250' celebration will occur shortly after midnight on January 1, following the traditional New Year’s Eve ball drop.
The preview is scheduled for approximately 12.04 am, after the singing of ‘Auld Lang Syne’.
During the preview, the Times Square ball will be illuminated in red, white, and blue.
Organizers said that about 2,000 pounds of themed confetti will be released, accompanied by a fireworks display set to ‘America the Beautiful’.
Engaging '350 million Americans' in the moment
The event is being organized in partnership with the Times Square Alliance and Jamestown LP, the owner of 'One Times Square'.
Michael Phillips, president of Jamestown LP, said that 'One Times Square' has served as the backdrop for major national moments.
"One Times Square has long been a place where the world comes together to celebrate pivotal moments," Phillips said, citing historical events associated with the site.
Rios said that the initiative aims to encourage broad public participation.
"Our goal is to inspire all 350 million Americans to join in this moment," she said.
A new 'Constellation Ball' design
Organizers also announced plans for a new ball design that will debut during this year’s New Year’s Eve celebration.
The ‘Constellation Ball’ will feature crystals and illuminated design elements, including Morse code-style messages.
The new ball is scheduled to debut on December 31.
Organizers said that details of the specific design for the July 3, 2026, 'America250' ball will be revealed shortly before that event.
