Todd Meadows, 25, dies at sea during 'Deadliest Catch' fishing trip
ANCHORAGE, ALASKA: Todd Meadows, a 25-year-old deckhand on Discovery Channel’s hit reality series ‘Deadliest Catch’, has died while fishing in the Bering Sea, his captain Rick Shelford confirmed in a heartfelt social media post.
Meadows died on February 25 while out at sea, Shelford revealed, describing the loss as deeply personal for the crew of the Aleutian Lady. The cause of death has not been shared.
Rick Shelford shares emotional tribute to Todd Meadows
Shelford, who captains the Aleutian Lady - a crab fishing vessel featured on ‘Deadliest Catch’ - announced the tragic news in a lengthy Facebook post, calling Meadows more than just a crew member.
“We lost our brother,” Shelford wrote.
“Todd was the newest member of our crew, he quickly became family. His love for fishing and his strong work ethic earned everyone’s respect right away,” he continued. “His smile was contagious, and the sound of his laughter coming up the wheelhouse stairs or over the deck hailer is something we will carry with us always.”
The captain’s words painted a picture of a young man who fit in instantly despite being the newest addition to the team. Life on a crab boat is demanding and dangerous, but Shelford made it clear that Meadows had already left a lasting mark.
Todd Meadows remembered as a devoted father of three
Beyond his work at sea, Shelford highlighted Meadows’ life as a father and family man. The 25-year-old leaves behind three sons.
“Todd's love for his children, his family, and his life was evident in everything he did. He worked hard, loved deeply, and brought joy to those around him. Right now, our hearts are broken in a way that words can’t fully express,” Shelford wrote.

He asked people to keep Meadows’ children and family in their thoughts during what he described as an unimaginable time.
“We ask that you lift Todd’s children and family in prayer and keep them in your thoughts as they face the days ahead without him. Todd will forever be part of this boat, this crew, and this brotherhood. Though we lost him far too soon, his legacy will live on through his children and in every memory we carry of him.”
A GoFundMe page has since been launched to support his three sons. The fundraiser has raised over $26,000 so far.
‘Deadliest Catch’ community mourns loss of young deckhand
A representative for Warner Bros Discovery, which airs ‘Deadliest Catch’, also confirmed Meadows’ death in a statement.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Todd Meadows. This is a devastating loss, and our hearts are with his loved ones, his crewmates, and the entire fishing community during this incredibly difficult time.”
‘Deadliest Catch’, which premiered in 2005, follows crab fishermen off the coast of Alaska as they navigate some of the harshest and most life-threatening conditions on the water. The series documents the intense crab seasons in the Bering Sea, a dangerous stretch of water between Alaska and Russia known for brutal waves, high winds, and freezing temperatures.
The show has long highlighted the risks fishermen face on deck, where heavy equipment, icy conditions, and powerful storms make every trip unpredictable.
