Trump backs SAVE America Act during America 250 speech, says bill would end 'election cheating'
WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump used his America 250 remarks on Saturday, July 4, to renew his call for the SAVE America Act, arguing that requiring proof of citizenship for voting is necessary to protect US elections.
Speaking to supporters during the celebration, Trump said tighter voting rules would help preserve confidence in the electoral system and keep America strong.
His remarks came as Republicans continue to face significant hurdles in advancing the legislation through the Senate.

Donald Trump says voters should show proof of citizenship
Trump told the crowd that election safeguards should be strengthened nationwide.
“All voters must provide a little thing called proof of citizenship, and there will be no mail-in ballots, except for illness, disability, military deployment or travel, and you won’t have cheating on the elections anymore,” Trump said. “It’s very simple.”
The remark drew cheers from portions of the audience gathered for the America 250 celebration.
SAVE America Act faces challenges in the Senate
Despite Trump’s renewed push, the legislation faces a difficult path in Congress.
According to the information provided, Republicans in the Senate currently do not have enough votes either to pass the SAVE America Act or to eliminate the chamber’s 60-vote filibuster threshold that would allow the bill to move forward with a simple majority.
Election rules remain a central Trump issue
Trump has repeatedly argued that stronger voter verification measures are needed to ensure election integrity. During Saturday’s speech, he linked the proposal directly to his message about protecting the country’s future.
His comments came as he continued addressing supporters on a range of issues during the America 250 celebrations, including immigration, communism and voting laws.
While the SAVE America Act remains stalled in the Senate, Trump’s speech showed that election reform remains one of his key political priorities.
By placing the issue alongside themes of patriotism and national identity during the America 250 event, the president indicated that he intends to keep pushing for stricter voting requirements even as the legislation faces significant hurdles in Congress.
