WASHINGTON, DC: On Saturday, November 29, President Donald Trump announced that the airspace “above and surrounding” Venezuela was “CLOSED IN ITS ENTIRETY.”

The declaration marked a major escalation in the already fraught relationship between the United States and Venezuela, landing in the middle of warnings about possible military action against Venezuelan leadership.

Donald Trump’s closes Venezuelan airspace

Trump posted the announcement on his social-media platform writing, “To all Airlines, Pilots, Drug Dealers, and Human Traffickers, please consider THE AIRSPACE ABOVE AND SURROUNDING VENEZUELA TO BE CLOSED IN ITS ENTIRETY. Thank you for your attention to this matter! PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP.”

The statement followed a string of US operations targeting what the administration described as drug-trafficking networks linked to Venezuela. The United States has reportedly struck more than 20 suspected drug-running vessels in recent months as part of ongoing anti-narcotics missions in the region.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth previously said a strike carried out two weeks earlier resulted in the deaths of three individuals described as “narco-terrorists.” The Pentagon has framed these operations as necessary to disrupt drug routes it claims are tied to Venezuelan actors.

Although Trump’s announcement was framed as a directive for airlines to avoid Venezuelan airspace, legal experts have noted that the United States does not have unilateral authority to close another nation’s sovereign airspace.

Trump has repeatedly alleged that President Nicolas Maduro is overseeing large-scale narcotics smuggling. Maduro assumed office in January despite widespread concerns over the credibility of his election win. Opposition groups reviewed tally sheets from roughly 80 percent of voting machines and concluded that candidate Edmundo González received twice as many votes. The US-based Carter Center said the tally was consistent with its own analysis.

Nicolas Maduro denounces airspace order as colonialist threat

In response to Trump’s remarks, the Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the statement amounted to a “colonialist threat” and an attack on the country’s sovereignty. The ministry called the announcement “extravagant, illegal, and unjustified.”

Following the warning, Venezuelan authorities suspended migrant-deportation flights and revoked the operating rights of at least six international airlines that had already halted or reduced service to the country.

The airspace dispute came as the US increased its military presence in the Caribbean. According to the New York Times, Trump and Maduro spoke by phone last week and discussed the possibility of a future meeting, though no plans were finalized.

A previous report from October said Maduro had floated offering the United States a “significant stake” in Venezuela’s oil fields as a gesture aimed at improving relations and stabilizing his hold on power. Talks ended in early November, and tensions have climbed since.

The Miami Herald reported that the US president had positioned the military to carry out possible strikes on Venezuelan military facilities “at any moment,” while also approving covert CIA activity inside the country. Trump later said he had not made a final decision on authorizing strikes.

The US Department of Justice has also offered a $50 million reward for information leading to Maduro’s arrest or conviction, underscoring the depth of the confrontation between the two governments.
