WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump slipped into a comic tone while addressing Republicans, joking that his wife, Melania Trump, dislikes one of his most recognizable rally habits, his “YMCA” dance.
Speaking at the House GOP Member Retreat on Tuesday, January 6, Trump said Melania considers some of his actions “unpresidential,” especially his tendency to dance before large crowds.
Trump explained that Melania is not a fan of those moments at rallies or public events. “She’s a very classy person, right? She said it’s so unpresidential,” he said. Recalling their exchanges, he shared that she once asked, “Can you imagine FDR dancing?"
Trump says Melania dislikes his rally dancing
“She hates when I dance,” Trump said, describing her reaction to his well-known moves. Trump said he pushed back, responding, “I said, ‘Everybody wants me to dance,’” when Melania talked about FDR. Trump clarified that she was referring to Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
“She was talking about Franklin Delano Roosevelt, aka FCR. She said that to me,” he recalled.
Trump elaborated on how strongly Melania feels about it. “My wife hates when I do this. She's a very classy person, right? She said, ‘It’s not unpresidential.’ I said, 'but I did become president'...She said, ‘Darling please, the weightlifting is terrible.'”
He mimicked the first lady’s frustration, clenching his teeth as he made the point. He repeated her objection to the crowd. “‘Darling, it’s not presidential.’ She actually said, ‘Could you imagine FDR dancing?’”
He paused and scanned the room with a look of disbelief, drawing laughter from the audience. “And I said, ‘There’s a long history that perhaps she doesn’t know,’” Trump added with a grin. The president briefly shifted tone, calling Franklin Delano Roosevelt an “elegant fellow,” a remark he said was worth acknowledging despite their political differences.
He ended the anecdote by describing their ongoing disagreement over how crowds react to his dancing. “She said they don’t like it, they’re just being nice to me. I said that’s not right, the place goes crazy. They’re screaming ‘Dance!’”
After Nicolas Maduro’s capture, Trump weighs political strategy and criticizes Democrats
The meeting followed a major operation ordered by Trump over the weekend that led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
It came after a sustained US pressure campaign that included an increased American military presence in the Caribbean and strikes on vessels the US linked to d*** trafficking.
During his meeting with the press, Trump said he was open to adopting a more liberal position on the issue to appeal to left-wing voters, though he acknowledged that doing so would be politically difficult for him. He then criticized the Democratic Party, saying it lacked a clear policy on the matter.
