WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump on Thursday, April 2, removed Attorney General Pam Bondi from her post, according to a senior administration official and a source familiar with the matter.

The decision follows days of reported frustration within the White House over her leadership of the Justice Department.

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche is set to take over as acting attorney general effective immediately. The leadership change marks the second Cabinet-level departure in recent weeks.

Reports cite tension between Trump and Pam Bondi

Bondi’s removal comes amid reports that Trump had grown dissatisfied with her performance.

A person familiar with White House deliberations said the president had become “more and more frustrated” in recent days, adding that while he personally liked Bondi, he did not believe she had “executed on his vision” as intended.

According to sources, Trump and Bondi had a heated confrontation at the White House last week, though details of the exchange were not disclosed.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump acknowledged Bondi’s tenure while announcing her departure.

Pam Bondi is a Great American Patriot and a loyal friend, who faithfully served as my Attorney General over the past year. Pam did a tremendous job overseeing a massive crackdown in Crime across our Country," he wrote.

He added, “We love Pam, and she will be transitioning to a much needed and important new job in the private sector, to be announced at a date in the near future.”

Trump also confirmed the leadership transition, stating that “our Deputy Attorney General, and a very talented and respected Legal Mind, Todd Blanche, will step in to serve as Acting Attorney General.”

Blanche later responded on social media, saying, "Pam Bondi led this Department with strength and conviction and I’m grateful for her leadership and friendship."

He added, "Thank you to President Trump for the trust and the opportunity to serve as Acting Attorney General. We will continue backing the blue, enforcing the law, and doing everything in our power to keep America safe.”

DOJ challenges and policy disputes marked Pam Bondi's tenure

Bondi, a longtime Trump ally, was appointed after former nominee Matt Gaetz withdrew. She had longstanding ties to Trump, including serving on his legal defense team during his first impeachment trial and publicly supporting his claims regarding the 2020 election.

During her tenure, Bondi oversaw significant changes at the Justice Department, including the dismissal of numerous attorneys and FBI agents tied to prior investigations involving Trump.

Her leadership also coincided with a broader reduction in career staff, as some lawyers left the department.

The Justice Department under Bondi focused on several administration priorities, including shifting attention toward investigations into what Trump and his allies described as the “weaponization” of federal law enforcement and inquiries into voter fraud.

At the same time, the department faced legal setbacks in multiple high-profile cases.

Courts blocked or dismissed several efforts, including investigations involving the Federal Reserve and its chair, as well as cases targeting former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
