WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump shared that he would like to go up against former President Barack Obama in a general election to secure a third term in the White House, during a press meet in the Oval Office on Monday, March 31, reported Mediaite.

While Trump is currently serving his second term in the Oval Office, Obama served two consecutive terms from 2009 to 2017.

Franklin Roosevelt remains the only POTUS to serve more than two terms as the POTUS. He won four presidential elections from 1932 to 1944, following which the 22nd Amendment was ratified in Congress in 1951, limiting the presidency of an individual to a maximum of two terms.

Prior to that, it was customary for two-term presidents to decline to run again, following George Washington's decision in 1796. Repealing the 22nd Amendment at present would require the approval of two-thirds of both houses of Congress and three-fourths of the states.

Over the weekend, Trump suggested to reporters that he could run for a third term, saying, "You know, a lot of people would like me to do that. There are methods which you could do it, as you know.”

During a press briefing on Monday, the subject was brought up again by Fox News senior White House correspondent Peter Doocy, who hypothetically asked the incumbent, "If you are allowed – for some reason – to run for a third term, is there a thought that the Democrats could try to run Barack Obama against you?”

"I’d love that. That would be a good one," replied the 78-year-old commander-in-chief.

"I’d like that. No, people are asking me to run. And there’s a whole story about running for a third term. I don’t know. I never looked into it. They do say there’s a way you can do it, but I don’t know about that. But I have not looked into it.”

Netizens reacting to Trump's comments derided him on the social media platform X. The following tweets demonstrate their takes.

"Trump would lose by double digits," wrote a user.

"The man wants a rematch with a president who legally can’t run again. That’s not a campaign, it’s a therapy session," jibed another.

"He sure has a lot of different ideas for something that he’s never looked into," shared a third.

"Careful what you wish for," quipped a fourth.

"This country is entering into new paradigms of stupidity," chided a fifth.
