WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump couldn’t resist roasting his second-in-command over breakfast.

At a Wednesday morning sit-down with Republican senators at the White House, Trump playfully jabbed Vice President JD Vance for “butting into conversations,” while laying out how he wants his cabinet to behave.

The closed-door breakfast came just hours after what Fox’s Bret Baier called a “big loss” for the GOP, a bruising election night that saw Democrats sweeping several major races, including the New York City mayoral race and both the Virginia and New Jersey governors’ seats.

Trump urged his party’s senators to scrap the filibuster altogether, claiming that doing so would lock in Republican dominance. “If we do what I say, they’ll likely never obtain power,” Trump declared.

Before anyone could dwell on Tuesday night, Trump lightened the mood with a story from his recent sit-down with Chinese President Xi Jinping. According to Trump, his meeting with Xi became a masterclass in maintaining cabinet discipline. He recalled making a comment to one of Xi’s deputies and getting no response.

“I said, ‘Are you going to answer me?’ No response, and President Xi did not let him,” Trump said. “Any question I asked, I wanted my cabinet to behave like that. I am demanding, sit up like that, nice and straight. Never seen men so scared in their lives.”

Trump said the Chinese official eventually responded, but only after receiving permission. “They have an equivalent of a vice president. I said, ‘Are you going to answer my question?’ He didn’t move. I was like, 'What is wrong with this guy?' And then he said, 'I will answer all questions.’”

Turning to his own vice president, Trump quipped, “Why don’t you behave like that? JD does not behave like that.” He added, “JD butts into conversations. At least for a couple of days, we’ll keep you long-term, but a couple of days of that would be nice.”

Donald Trump says Xi Jinping meeting was ‘a great one’'

Trump’s recollection came after last week’s high-profile meeting with Xi, which he later described as “a great one.” The sit-down marked another tense moment in the long-running US–China standoff that has been simmering since 2018, involving tariffs and verbal jabs.

Despite the tensions, Trump struck an optimistic tone. “My G2 meeting with President Xi of China was a great one for both of our countries. This meeting will lead to everlasting peace and success. God bless both China and the USA!” he posted on Truth Social

JD Vance comments on GOP losses

Following Tuesday’s poor showing for the GOP, Vance took to social media to urge Republicans not to panic and focus on voter priorities.

“I think it’s idiotic to overreact to a couple of elections in blue states, but a few thoughts,” Vance wrote. “We need to focus on the home front.”

Vance added that Republicans must make life more affordable for Americans to regain trust ahead of the 2026 midterms. “The president has done a lot that has already paid off in lower interest rates and lower inflation, but we inherited a disaster from Joe Biden, and and Rome wasn’t built in a day,” he said. “We’re going to keep on working to make a decent life affordable in this country, and that’s the metric by which we’ll ultimately be judged in 2026 and beyond.”
