WASHINGTON, DC: Donald Trump ignited a storm online on Monday, September 8, after downplaying a “little fight with the wife” when discussing Washington, DC’s crime statistics.

His controversial remarks came during a speech at the Religious Liberty Commission’s meeting, following his August 7 order for a federal law enforcement surge to tackle rising crime in the nation’s capital.

Donald Trump appears to downplay domestic violence amid crime crackdown

President Trump stirred controversy when he appeared to downplay domestic disputes as part of crime statistics. Referring to minor incidents as “a little fight with the wife,” Trump implied such cases shouldn’t count when measuring crime in the nation’s capital.

The remarks came as he touted his recent deployment of federal law enforcement to DC, claiming the move transformed it from “the worst, the most violent city” into “a totally safe zone.”

“There’s no crime,” Trump declared. “They said crime is down 87 percent — no, no, no, it’s more than 87 percent, [it’s] virtually nothing.” He added, “Much lesser things, things that take place in the home they call crime, you know — they’ll do anything they can to find something. If a man has a little fight with the wife, they say, ‘This was a crime, see,’ so now I can’t claim 100 percent. But we are a safe city.”

According to Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) figures released on September 1, overall crime in Washington, DC, dropped by 14%, and violent crime decreased by 39% compared to the same 25-day period in 2024. Within the violent crime category, homicides fell by 58% and robberies by 57%.

Trump also suggested that other cities, like Chicago, should follow DC’s example, questioning why city officials hadn’t requested federal assistance. “[I don’t know] why Chicago isn’t calling us saying, ‘Please give us help,’” he said. His remarks come as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) launches a new immigration crackdown focused on Chicago and other Democrat-led cities.

Internet erupts as Donald Trump comments on fight with wife at home

Donald Trump’s controversial remark referring to a “little fight with the wife in the home” ignited a firestorm online, with a video clip of the moment racking up over 9 million views and more than 1,600 comments within just a few hours. Social media users quickly weighed in, offering a wide range of reactions.

One commenter defended Trump, writing, “Just because a married couple argues does not equate to domestic violence!”

A supporter asked, “Why are you always trying to twist his words? We heard what he said — and there was nothing wrong with it. Ask him how he feels about domestic violence and you’ll get a real answer.”

Others were outraged. One user exclaimed, “Oh, you know, just downplaying domestic violence. That’s where we are now in the timeline.”

Another warned, “Domestic violence is a crime. Only a barbaric society would downplay or decriminalize it.”

A different commenter clarified, “Domestic violence is a crime. Verbal arguments are not.”

Some responses turned sarcastic, with one person calling the remark “an insane statement that stands out even in the pantheon of insane things this dude has made.”

Another user cautioned, “That kind of statement can actually be very dangerous,” echoing broader concerns that Trump’s language could minimize serious issues.
