Trump says Iran will 'pay many times over' every time it kills a US soldier
WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump on Monday, July 20, declared that he has issued a standing directive ordering the US military to retaliate every time Iran kills an American service member, warning Tehran it will "pay many times over" for every US soldier lost.
The announcement comes just days after US Central Command confirmed multiple American military casualties in Jordan and Iraq, marking one of Trump's clearest public declarations yet of an automatic retaliation policy as the conflict with Iran continues to escalate.
Trump announces standing directive
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he had instructed senior military leaders to respond forcefully whenever Iran is responsible for the death of an American service member.
"Every time Iran kills an American Soldier they will pay for that killing many times over!" Trump wrote.
He added that the directive had already been passed to Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Daniel Caine and military leaders across the armed forces, signaling that retaliation would be automatic rather than decided on a case-by-case basis.
The statement represents one of the administration's strongest public policy declarations since fighting between Washington and Tehran intensified.
Trump's warning follows troop deaths
Trump's announcement comes after a deadly weekend for US forces in the Middle East.
CENTCOM recently confirmed that two American service members were killed in an Iranian attack in Jordan, while military search teams later recovered unidentified remains at the site where troops had gone missing. In a separate incident, another US service member was killed in northern Iraq during the controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from an Iranian one-way attack drone.
The mounting casualties have increased pressure on the administration to respond more aggressively to Iranian attacks targeting American personnel across the region.
Conflict enters dangerous phase
The latest warning underscores how rapidly the confrontation between the United States and Iran has evolved from periodic military exchanges into a broader regional conflict.
In recent days, US forces have carried out additional strikes against Iranian targets while Tehran has continued attacks using missiles, drones and proxy forces operating across the Middle East.
